cRPG List: From Devil's Dungeon to Dragon Age

List of Computer Role-playing Games

This is a chronological listing of computer role-playing games that are covered in cRPG History. The cRPGs listed constitute the treatment range of the cRPG Blog.

Total scores for each cRPG are given in cRPG Reviews whereas cRPG Design rates each cRPG in 11 categories of design.

Pre-1987 cRPGs

Devil's Dungeon 1977 TRS-80

The first commerical cRPG released for home computers was Charles William Engel's Devil's Dungeon of 1977.

Coded in the Basic programming language (Micro-Soft, 1975), Devil's Dungeon features dungeon exploration, combat encounters, experience-point acquisition, wealth accumulation, 2x character stats and environmental hazards.

The above infographic is to be read row by row, from left to right. After assembling the infographic I removed a few lines of text-repetition (in the 6th panel) and changed the font color from native blue to white in order to increase readability. Otherwise, this is exactly how Devil's Dungeon presents itself.

1987 cRPGs

Dungeon Master Atari ST original version 1987

1988 cRPGs

Pool of Radiance IBM PC 1988

1989 cRPGs

Midwinter IBM PC 1989

Hillsfar IBM PC 1989

Westwood Associates released Hillsfar for IBM PC MS-DOS 2.1 in 1989. Hillsfar was programmed by Kirk Fitzgerald and Ethan Grimes. Hillsfar is an AD&D-based adventure game that features flip-screen exploration and fixed-screen and scrolling action sequences, some of which are timed. You only create one AD&D character. Hillsfar displays in 16-color EGA/VGA 320x200.

Curse of the Azure Bonds IBM PC 1989

Strategic Simulations Inc. released Curse of the Azure Bonds for IBM PC MS-DOS 1989. Curse of the Azure Bonds was programmed by Scott Bayless, Russ Brown and Michael Mancuso. CotAB displays in EGA 320x200. CotAB is based on the Azure Bonds novel of 1988 by Kate Novak and Jeff Grubb.

1990 cRPGs

Secret of the Silver Blades IBM PC 1990

Strategic Simulations Inc. released Secret of the Silver Blades for IBM PC MS-DOS 1990. Secret of the Silver Blades was programmed by Ken Nicholson and Russ Brown. SotSB displays in EGA 320x200.

1991 cRPGs

Gateway to the Savage Frontier IBM PC 1991

Beyond Software released Gateway to the Savage Frontier for IBM PC MS-DOS in 1991. GttSF was programmed by Cathryn Mataga. GttSF displays in 256-color VGA 320x200. However, it does not exploit the VGA color range.

Eye of the Beholder IBM PC 1991

Moonstone Amiga 1991

Rob Anderson released Moonstone: A Hard Days Knight for the Amiga in 1991. Moonstone was ported to IBM PC MS-DOS in 1992. Moonstone features basic turn-based strategy and real-time hack n slash combat. Uniquely, Moonstone supports up to four players. Being an Amiga game, Moonstone's 2D graphics and overall presentation far exceed other cRPGs of the time, but strategy and tactics depth just aren't there. Overall, 5/10.

The Immortal IBM PC 1991

Neverwinter Nights IBM PC 1991

Beyond Software released Neverwinter Nights for IBM PC in 1991. Built on the SSI Gold Box engine, NWN was programmed by Cathryn Mataga. NWN was the first graphics-based online multi-player role-playing game. If you have played BioWare's Neverwinter Nights of 2002, picture NWN of 1991 as a primitive Gold Box version of that. NWN displays in 16-color EGA 320x200.

Death Knights of Krynn IBM PC 1991

1992 cRPGs

Darklands IBM PC 1992

Ultima Underworld IBM PC 1992

Legends of Valor IBM PC 1992

Treasures of the Savage Frontier IBM PC 1992

Beyond Software released Treasures of the Savage Frontier for IBM PC MS-DOS in 1992. TotSF was programmed by Mark Buchignani and Cathryn Mataga. TotSF displays in 256-color VGA 320x200.

Dark Queen of Krynn IBM PC 1992

Unlimited Adventures IBM PC 1993

MicroMagic released Unlimited Adventures for IBM PC MS-DOS 3.3 in March of 1993. Unlimited Adventures was programmed by David Blake, Jason Linhart and Bill Sloan. As its name suggests, Unlimited Adventures allows players to build their own adventure modules via Gold Box data and art assets, but it also includes one pre-built adventure: The Heirs to Skull Crag. UA displays in 256-color VGA 320x200.

Overall, I give Unlimited Adventures 8/10. And overall, I give the Gold Box games 5/10.

Betrayal at Krondor IBM PC 1993

Dark Sun Shattered Lands 1993

Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager 1994

Al-Qadim IBM PC 1994

Cyberlore Studios released Al-Qadim: The Genie's Curse for IBM PC MS-DOS Protected mode run-time 1.96 in 1994. Al-Qadim was programmed by Ken Grey. Al-Qadim features seamless transition and screen-scrolling in top-down perspective.

The AD&D-based Arabian Nights-inspired Al-Qadim is set in TSR's Al-Qadim campaign setting of 1992. The player does not get to create a character from scratch, but the pre-defined scimitar-wielding protagonist does have stats, spells and experience-point-based level progression. In addition, there are NPCs and dialogue selections. Al-Qadim displays in 256-color VGA 320x200.
