Ishar: Legend of the Fortress IBM PC MS-DOS 1992 Silmarils

Ishar Games PC DOS

Silmarils of France released three Ishar games for PC DOS between 1992 and 1994.

Ishar: Legend of the Fortress

Silmarils released Ishar: Legend of the Fortress for IBM PC MS-DOS in April of 1992. Ishar: Legend of the Fortress was the first Ishar game.

Ishar: Legend of the Fortress is the sequel to Crystals of Arborea of 1990. In Ishar Silmarils removed the strategy map and turn-based combat mode that Crystals of Arborea featured.

Ishar: Legend of the Fortress is flip-screen cRPG in the vein of Dungeon Master of 1987. The main difference between Ishar and Dungeon Master and its clones is that Ishar focuses on wilderness combat and exploration whereas Dungeon Master and its clones are focused on dungeon-crawling.

Ishar: Legend of the Fortress was conceived by Michel Pernot and Pascal Einsweiler; was programmed by Michel Pernot, André Rocques and Louis-Marie Rocques; was drawn by Jean-Christophe Charter and Pascal Einsweiler; and was composed by Fabrice Hautecloque.

The object of Ishar is to prevent Krogh the Sorcerer from enslaving Kendoria. Krogh is the off-spring of Morgoth and Morgula. Assuming the role of Aramir the player controls a six-man adventuring party in real-time from a first-person perspective. Aramir and his party travel through Kendoria to the mysterious fortress, Ishar.

Amusingly, it costs 1,000 GP to save the game.

Ishar displays in 256-color VGA 320x200. Ishar employs 100,000 drawspaces 256x126px in size (yes, the drawspace size is smaller than Crystals of Arborea's 320x152).

Ishar requires an i80386 CPU and 4 megs of RAM. Ishar employs PCM digitized sounds via AdLib or Sound Blaster.

Ishar: Legend of the Fortress was distributed on 1x 3.5" 720kB diskette or 4x 5.25" 360kB floppy disks. The hard disk drive install size is 1.5 megs and consists of 105 files.

Ishar: Legend of the Fortress Manual: 31 pages.

Ishar 2: Messengers of Doom

Silmarils released Ishar 2: Messengers of Doom for IBM PC MS-DOS in 1993. Ishar 2: Messengers of Doom is the sequel to Ishar: Legend of the Fortress of 1992 and the prequel to Ishar 3: The Seven Gates of Infinity of 1994.

Ishar 2: Messengers of Doom was conceived by Michel Pernot and Pascal Einsweiler; was programmed by Michel Pernot, André Rocques and Fabrice Hautecloque; was drawn by Jean-Pascal Einsweiler, Jean-Christophe Charter and Eric Galand; and was composed by Fabrice Hautecloque.

The object of Ishar 2 is to free Zach's Island from the monk of chaos, Shandar.

Ishar 2 displays in 256-color VGA 320x200. Ishar 2 employs 400,000 drawspaces 256x113px in size (yes, the drawspace size is smaller than the original Ishar's drawspace of 256x126).

Ishar 2 features seven islands to explore, potion recipes, one dozen offensive spells, 13 defensive spells and seven specific spells. Over Ishar, the user interface has been improved, the gameworld is much larger and saving the game is free, not 1,000 GP.

Ishar 2 requires an i80386 CPU and 4 megs of RAM and was distributed on 2x 3.5" 1.44MB HD diskettes. The hard disk drive install size is 3 megs and consists of 155 files.

Ishar 2: Messengers of Doom Manual: 33 pages.

Ishar 3: The Seven Gates of Infinity

Silmarils released Ishar 3: The Seven Gates of Infinity for IBM PC MS-DOS in 1994. Ishar 3: The Seven Gates of Infinity is the sequel to Ishar 2: Messengers of Doom of 1993.

Ishar 3: The Seven Gates of Infinity was conceived by Michel Pernot and Pascal Einsweiler; was programmed by Michel Pernot, André Rocques and Jean-François Trevien; was drawn by Jean-Pascal Einsweiler, Guillaume Maginot and Eric Galand; and was composed by Fabrice Hautecloque.

Ishar 3 displays in 256-color VGA 320x200. The active drawspace is 256x113px. Ishar 3 requires an i80386 CPU and 4 megs of RAM. Ishar 3 is a Rational Systems DOS/4GW Protected Mode run-time.

The main difference between Ishar 3 and the previous two Ishar games is that players can optionally create a party of five characters at the start of the game. Otherwise, they can simply assume the role of Zubaran and recruit four party members from taverns.

In Ishar 3 the party adventures through seven different time eras via the Portals of Time. Ishar 3 features color-coded map locations, wandering NPCs, potion recipes, one dozen offensive spells, 13 defensive spells and seven specific spells.

Ishar 3 was distributed on 4x 3.5" 1.44MB HD diskettes. The hard disk drive install size is 4.5 megs and consists of 109 files. The hard disk drive install size of the cinematized CD-ROM version of Ishar 3 is 40 megs and consists of 162 files.

Ishar 3: The Seven Gates of Infinity Manual: 33 pages.

Ishar 3 supports party importation from Ishar 2. If you don't import your characters will be 16th level but only one of the characters will have an item: sword +4. This makes the start of the game harder unless you know where to go and what to do.
