Westwood Associates' Eye of the Beholder games are flip-screen cRPGs released in 1991 and 1993 for IBM PC MS-DOS. The Eye of the Beholder games have their origin in Dungeon Master of 1987.

Eye of the Beholder IBM PC 1991



Westwood Associates released Eye of the Beholder for IBM PC MS-DOS in 1991. Set in TSR's Forgotten Realms campaign setting (FRCS), Eye of the Beholder is an AD&D-based clone of FTL's Dungeon Master of 1987, which is a flip-screen cRPG.

The object of the Eye of the Beholder is to explore a 12-level dungeon under the City of Waterdeep and defeat the beholder, Xanathar.

Eye of the Beholder displays in 256-color VGA 320x200; it features a 176x120px drawspace.

Eye of the Beholder was designed and programmed by Phillip W. Gorrow; the Amiga port was coded by Bill Stokes.

Eye of the Beholder requires 565,000 bytes of free conventional RAM.

Distributed on 3x 3.5" 720kB DD diskettes or 5x 5.25" 360kB DS DD floppy disks, Eye of the Beholder extracts and installs to hard disk drive via PKSFX Self-Extract Utility 1.1 by PKWARE Inc. The install size is 2 megs.

Eye of the Beholder 2 IBM PC 1991



Westwood Associates released Eye of the Beholder 2: The Legend of Darkmoon for IBM PC MS-DOS in 1991. Eye of the Beholder 2 was programmed by Phillip W. Gorrow; the Amiga port was coded by Bill Stokes. 

The object of Eye of the Beholder 2 is to explore Temple Darkmoon and defeat the red dragon, Dran Draggore. Players explore forests, temples, catacombs and towers.

Eye of the Beholder 2 added 6x recruitable NPCS, increased environmental interaction, added outdoor areas and introduced respawning enemies.

Distributed on 3x 3.5" 720kB DD diskettes, Eye of the Beholder 2 extracts and installs to hard disk drive via Eye of the Beholder 2 Installation Program. Install size is 1.8 megs. Eye of the Beholder 2 requires 570K of free conventional RAM.

Eye of the Beholder 3 IBM PC 1993



Strategic Simulations Inc. released Eye of the Beholder 3: Assault on Myth Drannor for IBM PC MS-DOS/4GW Protected mode run-time 1.97 in 1993. EotB 3 was programmed by John Miles; there is no Amiga version.

The object of Eye of the Beholder 3 is to explore the Ruins of Myth Drannor in search of the dread lich, Acwellan, and the Dark God. Players explore glens, forests, tombs, temples and guilds. There are six recruitable NPCs and 30 different monsters to battle in EotB3.

Eye of the Beholder 3 requires an i80386 CPU, 575,000 bytes of free conventional RAM and 983,040 bytes of EMS RAM.

A disk-caching driver such as Microsoft SmartDrive (SMARTDRV) is recommended.

Eye of the Beholder 3 allows the use of two sound cards: one for digital sound effects (e.g, Sound Blaster Pro) and one for music (e.g., Roland LAPC). There are five music tracks and 70 digitized sound effects.

Distributed on 3x 3.5" 1.44MB HD diskettes and 1x 720kB DD diskette, Eye of the Beholder 3 extracts and installs to hard disk drive via Robert K. Jung's DEARJ 2.30. The install size is 9 megs.
