ABAZIGAL, BG2, Baldur's Gate 2

Abazigal BG2

Abazigal charges, wielding the Sword of Grief.

Abazigal is a Baldur's Gate enemy in BioWare's cRPG of 2000-01, Baldur's Gate 2. In Throne of Bhaal, Abazigal is a half-dragon Bhaalspawn BG2 most notable for his incredible THAC0 and AC as well his ability to shift into an epic dragon form.

In humanoid form, Abazigal wields one of the most epic weapons in BG2: Gram the Sword of Grief.

Abazigal Location

Abazigal can be found in his lair at the start of ToB (AR 6005).

How to Beat Abazigal

The most powerful Bhaalspawn by a long shot, and one of the most powerful beings in BG2, Abazigal is a THAC0 and Armor Class Lord who is devastating in both humanoid and dragonkind forms.

Abazigal must be beaten twice: once in Humanoid form and once as a blue dragon. Both forms of Abazigal are immune to backstab and have innate true seeing.

You are going to want a high level spellcaster (such as Edwin) with access to the best spells, a Fighter Mage of some sort or a few well-equipped and well-buffed epic-level warriors in order to beat Abazigal in dragon form.

We receive 40,000 quest XP for slaying Abazigal. We can also loot his corpse for Gram the Sword of Grief, Flail Head (Electrical) and Blue Dragon Plate Armor.

Abazigal Humanoid Form

In Humanoid form, Abazigal has a THAC0 of -28 and inflicts 40 damage Kai strikes at a rate of 3 ApR, wielding Gram the Sword of Grief as Grandmaster in two-handed swords and Specialist in Two Handed Weapon Style.

Defensively, Abazigal's legendary staying power stems from an AC of -16, 280 HPs, Hardiness and innate immunity to electrical damage as well as 65% magic resistance and 80% resistance to missile damage.

Humanoid Abazigal does not activate his GWW and does not reactivate Hardiness.

Even though its offense and defense are rock solid, the Humanoid form is easy to beat because it is basically just a souped-up mundane martial.

As such, raw supertankingMirror ImageStoneskin or PfMW are basically all we need for defense, and any warrior worth a damn should be able to smack the Humanoid form down if they have access to a good weapon.

Abazigal Immunities: Humanoid Form

Humanoid Abazigal is immune to backstab, electricity, Petrification, Polymorph, Power Word: Sleep, Sleep, Vorpal, Imprisonment, Charm, Panic, Level Drain, Berserk, Power Word: Kill, Disintegrate, Dire Charm, Poison, Stun, Paralysis, Hold and Web.

Abazigal Dragon Form

Dragon Abazigal on the rampage.

In blue dragon form, Abazigal trades in some of his martial prowess for dragon abilities and arcane spellcasting abilities that include Stoneskin, Contingency (Minor Spell Turning, Remove Magic) and Spell Trigger (Improved Haste, Heal, Righteous Magic and Armor of Faith). In addition, Dragon Abazigal can cast Finger of Death, Maze and other surprises besides.

The main problem is Abazigal's initial flurry when he shifts into dragon form. For example, dragonsbreath and the epic-level Remove Magic that debuffs the party. Thus, it is best to only have our toughest combatant finish off the Humanoid form, with everyone else at safe distance.

Abazigal Immunities: Dragon form

Dragon Abazigal is immune to backstab, Time Stop and all projectiles (arrows, bolts etc.), but not MMM. In addition, as a dragon, he is immune to Paralysis, Slow, Entangle, Web, Grease, Charm, Stun, Hold, Wing Buffet, Sleep, Power Word: Sleep, Power Word: Stun, Silence, Petrification, Polymorph, Vorpal, Imprisonment, Panic, Level Drain, Berserk, Power Word: Kill, Disintegrate and Poison.

Dragon Abazigal is also helmed.

Abazigal Dragon Fear

As with Firkraag, it is best to protect the party from Abazigal's fear aura by buffing saving throws or by means of the Chaotic Commands spell. Otherwise we're just randomly running around in a panic, which basically means we're going to die soon. Enraged Berserkers or Raging Barbarians are immune to Fear, and Cavaliers are naturally immune to fear.

Blue Dragon Claw Damage

Dragon Abazigal has a THAC0 of -13 and his +4 enchanted claws inflict an average of 30 slashing damage at a rate of 6 ApR under Improved Haste.

Abazigal Wing Buffet

Wing Buffet is an MR-bypassing, no-save AoE that inflicts trivial damage but also briefly knocks BACK and knocks OUT party members, as per Smite. It is more of an annoyance that anything else since there is no way to ward against its effects.

Tail Slap: Earthquake

Employed by Dragon Abazigal at intervals, Tail Slap is a save vs. Spell damage and immobilization AoE as per the Cleric spell, Earthquake.

Blue Dragon Lightning Breath

Blue Dragon Lightning Breath is an electrical AoE ejected by Abazigal at intervals. While it inflicts upwards of 300 electrical damage on failed saves vs. Breath Weapon, there are many ways to protect against electrical damage; browse the elemental spells, for example.

Dragon Abazigal auto-casts Lower Electrical Resistance beforehand, aka Greater Malison.

Abazigal Shockwave

Shockwave is a Save vs. Spell AoE employed at intervals that electrifies the floor, randomly inflicting electricity damage, spellcasting failure or sleep.

Frost Salamanders

Not that he needs them, but Abazigal is accompanied by a mob of Frost Salamanders. They have THAC0s of 2 and inflict an average of 11.5 piercing damage at a rate of 5 ApR, wielding spears. They have ACs of -3 and 133 HPs.

Unlike the Frost Salamanders in Icewind Dale, they do not have cold auras.

9,000 XP.
