FLAIL OF AGES, BG2

Flail of Ages Baldur's Gate 2

A hand-sketched image of the Flail of Ages

Flail of Ages

Flail of Ages is a BG2 best weapon in BioWare's cRPG of 2000, Baldur's Gate 2. Even if not upgraded in Throne of Bhaal, it is inarguable that Flail of Ages is the best weapon in BG2. In fact, the Flail of Ages is one of the most encounter-impacting weapon on the Infinity Engine.

The Flail of Ages is the Bane of All & Sundry, not just of trolls (which its acid + poison kills). That's how over-powered it is.

By virtue of its on-hit MR-bypassing save vs. Spells Stun, Celestial Fury BG2 is the only other on-hand weapon that can contend with the flail's usefulness, but it cannot be upgraded in Throne.

Who can use the Flail of Ages

King-tier warriors with ApR use the Flail of Ages. That includes Fighter Mage BG2  (such as Kensages) and kitted Fighter BG2

Companion-wise, the FoA also won't go to waste if wielded by Korgan, Anomen or even Aerie (it depends on our BG2 party composition, doesn't it).

Grandmaster Flails, preferably with True Grandmastery, or go home. Put two points in Two-Weapon Style and dual-wield FoA with an off-hander like the Belm BG2 scimitar for +ApR, Defender of Easthaven for +DR (up to 85% is possible), or the mighty Crom Faeyr for Titan strength (25), when you return from the Underdark. However, Belm is the best off-hander because ApR rules. Kundane BG2, too.

Flail of Ages Location

The Flail of Ages is found in the de'Arnise Keep as early as the start of Chapter 2. Talk to Nalia in the Copper Coronet and then make your way to the Keep.

Making the Flail of Ages

The Flail of Ages is made at the forge on the ground level of de'Arnise Keep providing at least one of its heads has been found.

However, it does not gain on-hit Slow until all three heads have been added to it.

The flail can be upgraded to +4 / +5 by Cespenar in the Pocket Plane.

Flail Head Locations

  • The cold flail head is found on the stone lion statue on the ground floor of the de'Arnise Keep.
  • The acid flail head is found on the corpse of Glaicas, or given to the party by Glaicas.
  • The fire flail head is found on one of three stone statues in the golem chamber of the upper floor of the de'Arnise Keep.
  • The poison flail head is found in a pool of slime on the second level of Watcher's Keep.
  • The electric flail head is found on the corpse of Abazigal BG2.

Flail of Ages Free Action

Once fully upgraded, the Flail of Ages gets Free of Action status, meaning the wielder cannot be hasted for the purposes of ApR. In order to circumvent this nonsense, simply equip the flail AFTER casting Haste or Improved Haste on the wielder.

Flail of Ages Description

This flail has been in the care of Lord Arnise for some time, a relic of his adventuring youth. It has been kept disassembled, the individual pieces stored in separate locations, and only used in the direst of emergencies. Lord Arnise was likely concerned about the powerful magic that the weapon radiated when compiled, and rightfully so. A trail of destruction has followed it through history, leading straight back to the original owners. The flail was the creation of the warlike Rakshasa, a race of vengeful spirits that crave human meat, and used as an adaptable weapon that could suit any battle. During a particularly violent hunt the flail was lost, only to be returned when they used their affinity for magic to locate its powerful aura. They discovered that the weapon had found its way into the hands of a great human warrior, and the battle that followed was truly splendid. They have since used the item as bait countless times, 'losing' it again and again. Powerful items gravitate towards powerful people, and powerful people yield the most glorious battles.

With the addition of the fifth and final head to this weapon created by the evil Rakshasa race the true potential of the Flail of Ages is finally realized.
