INQUISITOR, Baldur's Gate 2

Inquisitor BG2

Inquisitor is a BG2 class in BioWare's cRPG of 2000, Baldur's Gate 2. What makes Inquisitors extremely powerful is their innate Dispel Magic and True Sight modal abilities.

Inquisitor Dispel Magic & True Sight

Quick-fire Dispel Magic cast at 2x character level breaks encounter design vs. enemy spellcasters. Thus, players don't need to learn how to beat enemy Mage with their own Mages, aka Mage duels: they simply cast True Sight to bring them into view, dispel their protections and then hack them to pieces.

SCS BG2 can nerf Inquisitor dispel to 1.5x or 1x Inquisitor level.

Note that Keldorn is an Inquisitor.

Inquisitor Description

The Inquisitor has dedicated his life to finding and eliminating practicioners of evil magic and defeating the forces of darkness, and his god has provided him with special abilities towards that end.

Inquisitor Advantages

  • May use 'Dispel Magic' ability once per day per 4 levels (starts at 1st level with one use): ability is used at speed factor 1 and acts at twice his actual level
  • May cast 'True Sight' once per day per 4 levels (starts at 1st level with one use)
  • Immune to Hold and Charm spells

Inquisitor Disadvantages

  • May not use 'lay on hands' ability
  • May not cast priest spells
  • May not turn undead

Inquisitor Stats

  • Minimum stats: 12-3-9-3-13-17
  • Recommend stats: >=18/91-18-18-11-13-18

Inquisitor HLAs

Inquisitors should have access to the following High Level Abilities:

Inquisitor Solo BG2

Inquisitor stats:

  • Strength: min 12 / rec 19
  • Dexterity: min 3 / rec 19
  • Constitution: min 9 / rec 19
  • Intelligence: min 3 / rec 9 [1]
  • Wisdom: min 13 / max 21 / rec 13 [2]
  • Charisma: min 17 / max 19 / rec 7 [3]

[1] Can take 3x hits of Illithid Intelligence-drain
[2] Inquisitors cannot cast normal Cleric/Priest spells
[3] Ring of Human Influence sets Cha to 18 (not important)

Stats assume importation of Paladin CHARNAME from BG1. Stats of 19 and above assume Tome usage in BG1.

Max starting stats for non-import Inquisitors are Str 18/00 and 18s for the other five stats.

BG1 imports start at max 161,000 XP or 8th level whereas new BG2 characters start at 89,000 XP or 7th level.

The original BG1 does not feature kits. Inquisitor is a kit. Therefore, BG1 does not feature the Inquisitor. In BG2 chargen BG1 Paladin imports get to choose a Paladin kit (Inquisitor) and reassign weapon proficiencies.

Console in the tomes and 161,000 XP if you don't want to go through BG1 first as a Paladin. Note that Inquisitor solos are easy even if you start at 89,000 XP and don't have the tomes.

  • Flail **
  • Two-weapon Style **
  • Shortbow ** or Katana **

or:

  • Two-handed Sword **
  • Two-handed Weapon Style **
  • Shortbow ** or Katana **

As a warrior you will get an extra proficiency allotment for every three levels attained:

  • 9th level or 300k XP
  • 12th level or 1.2mil XP
  • 15th level or 2.1mil XP
  • 18th level or 3mil XP
etc.

Note the XP required, though -- your initial selections are very important! It is better to go with Flail and TWS (dual-wield) and add Two-handed sword and THWS once you get GWW.

Don't bee-line for Carsomyr -- go for Flail of Ages on-hand and Belm off-hand. Tuigan is useful, too. You can get these three weapons very, very early. And FoA is an end-game wield, not just Carsomyr.

Celestial Fury is not an end-game wield, but it is a very good early-to-mid wield (because Stun).

You will gain your first HLA at 3mil XP. Choose Deva. After that, you want a mix of GWW, C-Strike and Hardiness. Do not skimp out on Hardiness or you won't be able to beat the multi-phase end-boss.

As mentioned above, Inquisitors do not gain access to normal divine spells like other Paladins do. Yes, some of those divine spells are very useful (AoF). However, none of them are as useful as the Inquisitor's True Sight and Dispel Magic.

Chateau Irenicus: The first thing you want to do is dump Imoen and either ignore or free Minsc and Jaheira and then dump them as well (because this is a solo game, not a party game).

Then, loot and equip arms and armor in the next room.

You are now ready to crash through Chateau Irenicus as a solo Inquisitor.

You won't need to cast DUHM, True Sight or Dispel Magic for every battle in the Chateau. Just remember that you have them.

Remember that you are an Inquisitor: you can see through enemy deceptions with True Sight and remove enemy protections with Dispel Magic. If something isn't yet ready for a smackdown, it soon will be.

No rogue can hide from you and no archmage or supernatural being can deceive you. And no enemy can withstand your weapons.

  • If you can't see it or it looks to be under an illusion, activate True Sight.
  • If you can see it but it looks protected, drop a Dispel Magic bomb.
  • If it is epic and keeps protecting itself, GWW with Carsomyr.

Inquisitor is the only pure warrior that can proactively tackle any combat encounter and go on the offensive against any enemy. Every other pure warrior is at the mercy of archmages and supernatural spellcasters.
