CHARNAME, Baldur's Gate

CHARNAME Baldur's Gate

CHARNAME is a name that refers to the player character in BioWare's cRPG series of 1998-2001, Baldur's Gate. Charname is simply a shortening of Character Name.

Charname refers to a Bhaalspawn who, most notably, defeats Sarevok in Baldur's Gate, Irenicus in Baldur's Gate 2 and The Ravager in the Throne of Bhaal expansion.

Charname is one of the most famous protagonists in cRPG History; only the Vault Dweller of Fallout 1 contends.

When not referred to by given name, Charname is often referred to by NPCs as the Child of Bhaal or simply as Bhaalspawn (BG2-only). Ward of Gorion and Gorion's Ward are also employed by official text.

CHARNAME Origin

The origin of Charname is found in dialog.tlk, a BioWare Infinity Engine file that holds all text that appears in the IE games. The game substitutes the string <CHARNAME> for the actual name players give to their character in chargen. The string appears over 200 times in BG1 and over 2,000 times in BG2.

If we can't come up with a name we like, we can also simply call our character Charname:
