PALADIN, Baldur's Gate 2

Paladin BG2

Paladin is a BG2 class in BioWare's cRPG of 2000, Baldur's Gate 2. Paladins must be of Human race and of Lawful Good alignment. All Paladins receive a 2-point bonus to each saving throw.

In BG2, unkitted Paladins are outstripped by the kitted Cavalier BG2, Undead Hunter BG2 and Inquisitor BG2 in terms of raw power. The Cavalier is more of a classic Paladin than an unkitted one, whereas Inquisitors can barely be called Paladins at all.

A paladin is a warrior bold and pure, the exemplar of everything good and true. Like the fighter, the paladin is a man of combat. However, the paladin lives for the ideals of righteousness, justice, honesty, piety, and chivalry. He strives to be a living example of these virtues so that others might learn from him as well as gain by his actions.

Paladin Spells

Unlike BG1, non-Inquisitor Paladins can cast Cleric spell circles beginning at 9th level or 300k XP. They can only cast up to fourth circle spells, but they only reach the fourth circle at 2.1 mil XP (15th level). However, their repertoire includes powerful buffs such as Armor of Faith and Draw Upon Holy Might, and they can eventually summon Skeleton Warriors through Animate Dead. Note that AoF erroneously stacks with itself but Paladins can "only" attain 65% damage resistance BG2 outside of Hardiness BG2 stacking.

Unlike Cleric BG2, Paladins don't receive a bonus to spell slots per circle based on Wisdom. Thus, Paladins with Wisdom 13 have access to the same number of spells per level as Paladins with Wisdom 25. Therefore, spells with level-based variables are more effective when cast by Clerics than they are by Paladins.

BG2 HLA is gained at 18th level or 3 mil XP. Most notable among those are Greater Whirlwind, Critical Strike, Hardiness and Summon Deva. In solos, the Deva should be chosen first.

Fallen Paladin

Paladins can become Fallen if they commit evil acts, such as murdering innocents. This removes the special abilities of the Paladin, but it does not nerf or impact their martial prowess or spellcasting ability.

Paladin Weapon Proficiencies

Paladins may only become proficient in or specialize in a weapon. The inability to GM a weapon is not a big deal because BG2 nerfed Grandmastery.

As a rule, Paladins wield the Holy Avenger known as Carsomyr BG2. Paladins receive 15 weapon proficiency choices by max 34th level. It is recommended to Specialize in Two-Handed Swords and Two-Handed Weapon Style for Carsomyr (6 ApR max until GWW).

However, the best wield for Paladins (as is the case with any warrior) is Flail of Ages BG2 on-hand, Belm BG2 off-hand (10  ApR under Improved Haste).

Paladin Build

Paladin DUHM

Unkitted Paladins do not have many advantages over Fighter BG2. One advantage is that good-aligned Fighters lose the Draw Upon Holy Might Bhaalspawn ability in Spellhold, whereas Paladins maintain DUHM through general divine spellcasting. Why is that important? DUHM eventually brings us up to Strength 25, Dexterity 25 and Constitution 25.

Paladin HLAs

Paladins should have access to the following High Level Abilities:
