Arcanum Best Schematics & Tech-Disciplines



There are 8 technological disciplines in Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura. The best technological disciplines in Arcanum are Mechanical and Smithy. It is not enough to focus on one discipline: many of the best schematics require solid investment in two.

The best Arcanum race for technologist is Dwarf. The best Arcanum background for technologist is Sickly or Idiot Savant.

Intelligence governs the learning of disciplines (getting the degree). Going tech is not recommended on maiden runs because you have to source and then carry around so much junk that clutters your inventory and weighs you down. You are going to need mules and storage facilities.

In comparison to Mages, technologists are not easy to play. It is also tedious sourcing parts from vendors. Technologist playthroughs are for veterans because more knowledge of the game is required in order to have fun with them.

There are 56 learned schematics and 58 found schematics in Arcanum. The best schematics in Arcanum are Automaton, Machined Platemail and Pyrotechnic Axe.

As with parts and materials, note that some schematics can be sourced from vendors (gun smiths, inventors, apothecaries) or otherwise found in the gameworld, such as the Pyrotechnic Axe schematic. These are called Found schematics as distinct from Learned schematics which are acquired as a result of getting Degrees (spending character points in disciplines).

To refresh a vendor's inventory, move away from them and rest for a day. Rinse repeat until the item you require finally spawns.

Take the Small Steam Engine, for example, which is needed for Mechanized Arachnid assembly (which in turn is needed for Automaton assembly). The SSE has a 10% chance of spawning in inventor vendor inventories, and a 5% chance to spawn in dwarven chests, such as those in the Dredge.

In Tarant, we can purchase tech manuals from the university bookseller for 750 GP. Each manual increases our Expertise (blue number) in technological disciplines based on our Intelligence score. Expertise governs our ability to interpret schematics. We can buff our Intelligence score with Essence of Intellect potions purchased from the Wise Women aka gypsies in order to employ more complicated schematics before we would otherwise be able to.

As our build becomes more technological in nature (gaining aptitude), Virgil's magickal healing becomes unreliable. He constantly attempts to heal us, but his chances are slim once our aptitude is substantial. Annoyingly, he prioritizes our technologist over non-tech Arcanum companions (the AI prioritizes the PC). For this reason, we need to find a way to heal ourselves (Herbology) or the Dredge is going to be a nightmare.

For each discipline section, the degrees are listed (build selections) followed by the learned schematics (which are physically bought or found in the gameworld).

The Gun Smithy discipline controls the design and implementation of new weaponry.
