Jan Jansen, Baldur's Gate 2 BG2 Companion

Jan BG2

Jan Jansen Location

Jan Jansen is a Baldur's Gate companion in BioWare's cRPG of 2000, Baldur's Gate 2. Jan is found in the Government District at the start of Chapter 2 (AR 1000: x 2730, y 1750). To recruit Jan, all we need to do is back him up when the tax agent comes along (8500 XP + 11,500 XP and Rep +2).

Jan Jansen Stats

Jan Jansen's Dexterity and Intelligence scores are respectable for an Illusionist Thief multi-class; there is nothing wrong with his stats.

Jan Jansen Build

Being multi-classed, Jan is one of the most powerful and versatile companions in BG2. In terms of power, he is up there with Aerie and Jaheira.

BG2 Best Spells aside, Jan is most useful for Use Any Item BG2 and Spike Traps BG2 as well as Find Traps and Detect Illusions (thief skills).

In terms of a Jan Jansen build, Find Traps and Detect Illusions should be maxed out first. Then, be sure to choose UAI and Spike Traps at the first opportunity.

We can buff Jan's thief stats with Mercrykiller Ring.

Jan Jansen Biography

When asked about his past, JAN stops tinkering with his gadgets and states that, despite all claims to the contrary, turnip beer has wondrous medicinal properties in addition to its fine taste.

Jan's mastery of the pun:

Jan Jansen Quest

Jan's quest involves a lot of running around, with almost no combat. Thus, he is easy to recruit and easy to keep in the party.

Jan returns home to help his former love, Lissa

  • Beeloo Jansen tracks the party down after an interval. Go to the Jansen home located in the Slums district. It is clearly marked on the map.
  • Go to the basement of Jan's home and speak with Uncle Gerhardt until he mentions "The Hidden." Then, go and tell Jan (3,300 XP).
  • Go to Lady Jysstev's estate in the Government district and have her set up a meeting with The Hidden (8,900 XP).
  • Go to the Copper Coronet in the Slums district. We need to get access to the back rooms, and the sewers. To gain access to the back rooms, choose dialogue options 1-2-2-3 with Lehtinan. Access to the sewers is granted by a secret door in the back rooms at x=2170, y=870.
  • In the sewer dungeon, The Hidden can be found at x=1070, y=2230. You may need to dispatch some hobgoblins en route.
  • Next, go to the Sea's Bounty tavern in the Docks district. We want to introduce ourselves as "A Seeker" to the fat guy named "The Thumb".
  • Next, go to the Five Flagon's inn in the Bridge district, take out the two Githyanki on the second floor, and then return to The Hidden in the sewers, who reveals itself as a mindflayer aka illithid (17,500 XP).
  • Return to Jan's home in the Slums. Jaella is cured, Lissa leaves with Vaelag, and Jan rejoins the party (15,500 XP).

Jan Jansen Items

As a gadgeteer, Jan comes equipped with no fewer than five unique items.

Flasher Launcher

This is Jan Jansen's crossbow, and such is its complexity that only he can use it.  Likewise, only he can make the special ammunition it is capable of firing.  Substantial tinkering on this launcher has made it especially accurate.

  • THAC0: +1 bonus
  • Weight: 10
  • Speed Factor: 3
  • Proficiency Type: Crossbow
  • Type: 2-handed
  • Usable By: Jan Jansen

Flasher Master Bruiser Mate

This is the ammunition for Jan's crossbow (the Flasher Master Bruiser).  These skulls are filled with a special powder that does a little bit of damage and has a chance to stun an opponent (saving throw vs. spells or be stunned for 2 rounds).

  • Special Ability: Stun opponent (save vs. spells) for 2 rounds
  • THAC0: +1 bonus
  • Damage: 1d2 + 1

Jansen  AdventureWear

Jansen-Brand Metal-Repellant AdventureWear - (patent pending)

This strange armor is made of a foreign material, very supple but strong to the touch.  Designed by and for Jan Jansen, only he may wear it.  The armor does not give any bonuses to the base armor class, but it does grant a +25% resistance to all physical damage and an additional +5 bonus to Jan's armor class against missile weapons.  Jan may also cast spells while wearing this armor. In addition, the armor is stylish.

  • 25% resistance to physical damage
  • AC: +5 bonus to missile attacks
  • Usable By: Jan Jansen
  • Note: Dryclean only

Jansen Techno-Gloves

Jansen-Brand Techno-Thieving Gadgetizer Gloves - (TM)

This set of thieving tools gives Jan an additional bonus to both his lock picking and pick pocketing.  He is the only one who can use the Gloves, as no one else quite has the knack of it. Oddly, he seems to be able to actually cast spells while wearing the things.  Must be because they got style.

  • Lockpicking: +20%
  • Pick Pockets: +20%

Jansen Spectroscopes

Jansen-Brand Micro-Macro Spectroscopes - (Official Spectroscopes of the Purple Brotherhood)

Another one of Jan Jansen's inventions, these glasses allow Jan to detect invisibility once per day.  They also give Jan an additional +25% to his detect and disarm traps abilities. Various lenses on the contraption increase Jan's ability to detect illusions by 20%. The style of the Spectroscopes is so obvious it hardly needs to be mentioned.

  • Special Abilities: detect invisibility once per day
  • Disarm Traps: +25%
  • Detect Traps: +25%
  • Detect Illusions: +20%

Maximum level: Jan maxes out at Illusionist (20) / Thief (28).
