Dwarf Baldur's Gate 1
If the Dwarf can BE a class, then the Dwarf is the best choice for that class.
As it pertains to Baldur's Gate class, Dwarves are the best choice for Fighter, Thief and Cleric as well as for Fighter/Cleric and Fighter/Thief multi-class by virtue of regeneration acquisition at Constitution 20 (Manual of Bodily Health) and a one-point bonus to Death, Wand and Spell saving throws for every 3.5 points in Constitution.
This far outweighs the one-point penalty to Dexterity, and regen is preferable to the Halfling's +skillpoints.
Constitution +1, Dexterity -1, Charisma -2.
Dwarf Description
Dwarves are short stocky fellows, easily identifiable by their size and shape.They have ruddy cheeks, dark eyes, and dark hair. Dwarves tend to be dour and taciturn. They are given to hard work, and care little for most humor. They enjoy beer, ale, mead, but most of all, they love gold. Dwarves have a natural resistance to magic and poison. They possess infravision, which allows them to see in the dark. They gain a bonus to their constitution, but incur a penalty to their charisma and dexterity. There are four racial divisions of dwarves within the Realms: Shield dwarves, Gold dwarves, Wild dwarves, and Duergar.
In BG2, Dwarves also make the best Barbarians, Berserkers and Kensai. Dwarven F/C saving throws stand at an impressive 0-0-4-4-1.
