Planescape: Torment - Enhanced Edition

Main menu and chargen screens from the original PS:T
Update: Official site is up (FAQ). Release date: April 11th.
Update: Launch Trailer is up.

• Optimized for 4K Ultra HD
• Improved Interface and Remastered Soundtrack
• Updates curated by original Lead Designer, Chris Avellone
This is the best way to play Planescape: Torment, hands-down. - Avellone.

Observations on video:

• It looks like the pathing routine has been greatly improved. This is a big one and the biggest selling point for me.
• UI aesthetics are largely unchanged. Colors are brighter -> don't like. PS:T = gritty. For a detailed treatment of the original PS:T UI, see here.
• Floaty text font is changed (no biggie).
• Examine item window is nicely scaled.
• Combat feedback has been added to the top-right of the display. It is not color-coded for clarity and readability (might as well?). It also doesn't look like it can be resized. It should be extendable to the vertical limit of the playing field, right down to the bottom panel.
• The dialogue window is not shown at all. I hope it's not in the top-right. It should be centered since dialogue is central to PS:T. And again, it should resizeable to the limits of one's display.
• Clunky portable pop-up is perhaps removed; the contents relocated to the left of the bottom panel.
• Spell-casting cutscenes have not been removed (Mechanus' Cannon is shown with blurring around the edges at high rez).
• Zooming function not shown. Character Sheet, World Map, Journal and Spellbook are not shown.
• Fog of war is very smooth; 32 bit color.
• Sprite outlines are shown; probably can be disabled like in Siege of Dragonspear.
• Let's hope Beamdog has the presence of mind to announce their IWD:EE and BG2:EE UI upgrades when the PS:T site goes up. ppl have been waiting ages to hear about it.

Countdown is up for Planescape: Torment - Enhanced Edition, Beamdog's next game.

Things I would say to Beamdog (this is what I wrote on March 25, before I saw the vid):

• Consultation with Avellone is mandatory.
• aVENGER should be in charge of combat scenarios (scripting, AI etc.)
• Removal of spell-casting cutscenes would be welcome (or at least an option to disable them).
• Rest Until Healed should not be added.
• Pathing routine optimization is a must.
• Fix the bugs.
• Don't add any new companions, quests or classes. Just work on Avellone-approved restorations.
• Make the dialogue window extendable to full height. Don't mess too much with UI aesthetics; aside from the clunky portable pop-up they are pretty much perfect as-is.
• Improve journal functionality.
• Make modding easier. I've always wanted to see SCS for PS:T.
• InXile's Torment: Tides of Numenera is a prime example of a major fuck-up. You will never be forgiven if you fuck up PS:T.
• Good luck! I believe you can do this. You proved you are capable with Siege of Dragonspear and no doubt learned a lot from previous EEs, such as the one for Icewind Dale.

In the end I'll always favor the original but it will be interesting to see what comes of this. I hope Beamdog can cash-in big because there is a chance, ever so slight, that a Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Edition might see the light of day (Trent Oster has talked about it before).

Also, I'm assuming this is the free game ppl will be getting as compensation for waiting so long for their Siege of Dragonspear Collector's Edition. That should make them happy.

From left to right: The Nameless One (TNO), Morte, Dak'kon, Annah, Grace, Ignus, Vhailor, Nordom.

Next post: Underrail.

  1. Chris seems to have been heavily involved, no new quests or anything. "restored content" mod is not included as chris feels the cut content was cut for a reason. UI remains extremely similar to original PST with some fixups to things you mentioned. Just some misc comments, also http://i.imgur.com/vY2304l.jpg

  3. lol @ calling Tides of Numenera a major fuck up. Planescape: Torment is probably my favorite game of all time, and I loved the hell out of Tides. It wasn't Planescape: Torment 2, and it was never meant to be.

Anyway.. Looking forward to this enhanced edition. Been wanting to replay it for years now. Should be a good time!

    1. Opinions and assholes, I guess. It was marketed as a spiritual successor and failed utterly. I don't like these Unity RPGs. They don't come close to the Infinity Engine ones. The whole Kickstarter renaissance is bollocks. There was only one renaissance, and it was brought on by Fallout and Baldur's Gate.

  4. "aVENGER should be in charge of combat scenarios (scripting, AI etc.)"

That would be amazing! His 'chosen of Cyric' encounter had just the right balance between cheesiness (a bit, but not too much) and difficulty (high, but not over-the-top), imo.

    1. You're right about that, chimaera. I'm planning on doing a write-up for the Chosen of Cyric in the future, since I'm churning out shorter posts now. It'll just be how my party handled it, along with some pics.

    2. It'll be interesting to read how a full party manages this battle. I've only played it with a party of two mages (and still had to raise one of them at the temple afterwards ;-) ).

  5. I'm not a fan of EEs, or Beamdog in general. I've left their forums, before SoD was announced. PS:T EE doesn't look as terrible, as the other EEs, but who knows what bugs will be introduced this time. Last time they advertised their title with Avellone's name, didn't turn out so well in my opinion, so I'll be watching closely.

Also, once again the original will be removed from GOG and instead will have to be bought with the EE.

    1. Aren't the originals bundled with the EEs on GoG? I have the originals (CD and GoG versions) and will always favor them over the EE, so it doesn't bother me. But yeah, I can see where you're coming from.
