Neverwinter Nights 1 Console Commands

Neverwinter Nights 1 Console Commands

The Neverwinter Nights 1 console lets us employ cheats by entering console commands. The console is called up by hitting the tilde (~) key. Then, type DebugMode 1 and hit the enter/return key in order to enter debug mode. DebugMode 0 exits debug mode. Note the case-sensitivity.

Level Up Console Command Neverwinter Nights 1

You can level-up your character with dm_levelup console command.

Gode Mode Console Command Neverwinter Nights 1

God mode (invincibility) is activated by typing dm_god console command.

Kill Enemy Console Command Neverwinter Nights 1

You can hit the "t" key in order to kill any enemy that is highlighted by your mouse cursor. You cannot cheat-kill enemies whose death is reliant on scripts.

Teleport Console Command Neverwinter Nights 1

You can teleport to the mouse cursor by hitting "+" on the NumPad. This can be helpful if the game glitches out or an NPC is blocking your way.

Give XP Console Command Neverwinter Nights 1

Give yourself an exact amount of XP with the dm_giveXP 1000  console command. Remove XP or de-level the character with the dm_giveXP -1000. Again, note the case-sensitivity.

Give Gold Console Command Neverwinter Nights 1

Give yourself gold with the dm_givegold console command.

Spawn Item Console Command Neverwinter Nights 1

You can spawn items in the game-world. The item will appear at the position of your mouse cursor (on the floor/ground). Type the dm_spawnitem console command followed by the NWN item code

Warning: Playing NWN while in debug mode can easily break interactions, quests and even plot progression. This is because some scripts won't trigger in debug mode (the yellow polygons you see on the floor/ground).

Other Console Commands

  • dm_mylittlepony
  • dm_cowsfromhell

Unlocking Chapters Neverwinter Nights 1

Chapters auto-unlock as we progress in the OC, SoU and HotU. In order to fast-track this, open nwnplayer.ini and add the following three lines to the end of the [Game Options] section:

CODEWORD=hacktastic
CODEWORD XP1=ffrodriguez
CODEWORD XP2=barkeater

You can now begin in any Chapter of the three official campaigns without having played through the previous ones first.

Neverwinter Nights 1 Installation

Install Neverwinter Nights to a non-Program Files folder and run the game as Administrator and in compatibility mode for XP SP3; otherwise the exe may crash. This stopped the CTDs for me on Windows 8.1, 10 and 11.

Windowed Mode Neverwinter Nights 1

To play in Windowed mode set FullScreen=0 and add the line AllowWindowedMode=1 under [Display Options] in nwn.ini. This actually doesn't work for me until I hit Alt-Enter in-game. This is handy because Alt-tabbing out of FS mode sometimes makes my game hang.

Disable Shiny Water Neverwinter Nights 1

If you're running an AMD chipset and the game crashes or the framerate is unbearably low, try changing ShinyWater=1 to ShinyWater=0 in nwn.ini. This can be done in-game, too.

Safe Movies Neverwinter Nights 1

If the intro movies for the official campaigns are not displaying (but you can hear the sound), try changing SafeMovie=0 to SafeMovie=1 in nwn.ini.

Disable Movies Neverwinter Nights 1

You can disable the logo movies (Atari etc.) by adding Disable Intro Movies=1 under [Display Options] in nwn.ini. Now you don't have to click through them every time you want to play.

High Resolution Font Neverwinter Nights 1

Unless playing in 800*600 (the resolution the game was clearly designed for), all players should employ the High Resolution Font in Advanced Video Options. If text is still not of readable size, you will either have to lower your resolution or install a UI mod.

Disable Launcher Neverwinter Nights 1

Players running the retail version (optical media CDs) may appreciate the ability to bypass the Launcher... simply navigate to your install folder, right-click nwmain.exe and make a short-cut to your desktop.

Neverwinter Nights 1 Troubleshooting

NWN Savegames Disappearing or Getting Corrupted

"Help! My save-game files are disappearing or getting corrupted!"

  • Solution: Don't run NWN through GoG Galaxy, or turn off cloud saves. Or play the original optical media version of NWN.

NWN Items Invisible

"Help! Cloaks, robes or characters are invisible/not showing up in the game-world."

  • Solution: About all you can do is switch to integrated graphics or roll back your AMD-ATI/Nvidia drivers.

NWN Low Framerate

"Even after turning off Shiny Water and reducing graphics settings to their absolute minimum, NWN still runs like a dog!"

  • Solution: Try changing your core affinity in Task Manager. If that doesn't get you out of the woods, about all you can do is switch to integrated graphics or roll back your AMD-ATI/Nvidia drivers. I realize that switching to integrated gfx or rolling back device drivers are solutions only for the most dedicated NWN player, but neither BioWare nor GoG support NWN's compatibility with current gen hardware and drivers, so there is very little we can do.

NWN Won't Run

"The game won't run even after setting compatibility mode/run as administrator! What can I do?"

  • Solution: Try running the Windows troubleshooter in regards to the exe. Try running in Windowed mode.

NWN Character Stuck / Character Can't Move

"My character is stuck on geometry, on top of/inside a wall or a door won't open etc."

  • Solution: Call up console mode with DebugMode 1 and hit the + key on your numpad to teleport to wherever you position your mouse cursor. Type DebugMode 0 to exit console mode.

Not Getting Maximum HPs NWN

"I'm not getting the maximum hit points (HPs) when I level up"

  • Solution: Open nwnplayer.ini and change Max Hit Points=0 to Max Hit Points=1.

Saving Throw Automatic Failure NWN

"My Will save is 40, the DC was 10, and I failed my save because I rolled 1 on the d20."

  • Solution: Open nwnplayer.ini and change Saving Throw Automatic Failure On 1=1 to Saving Throw Automatic Failure On 1=0.

NWN Module is Glitching Out

"Adventure module x-y-z isn't working or is glitching out/strange things are happening."

  • Solution: This is usually caused by files in the override conflicting with the adventure module (9 times out of 10 it's Tony K's Henchman Inventory & Battle AI Mod). Try removing the offending mod or simply return your override to its default state.

Character Moving Slowly NWN

"Why is my character moving so slowly?"

  • Solution: You probably have Search mode active or are encumbered due to ability score drain (disease/poison) or simply carrying too many items.

Red Dragon Disciple No Wings NWN

"What? My Dragon Disciple, demon or angel has no wings!"

  • Solution: Remove the cloak.

Transfer Diamond Edition savegames to Enhanced Edition

Can I transfer Diamond Edition savegames to my Enhanced Edition installation, and vice versa

  • Answer: You may transfer savegames from Diamond to Enhanced, but not vice versa. When attempting to load Enhanced savegames into Diamond, an error message pops up. You can transfer your EE characters to DE, though (and vice versa). Database files do not seem to be compatible [cdx, dbf, fpt].

Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition vs NWN Enhanced Edition

"Is EE worth the purchase for players who only play single-player, or not?"

As of 2023, the EE is not currently worth it. I have played both DE and EE extensively. Here are observations that are relevant to me personally:

  • DE enjoys +15 FPS over EE. Calling up UI modes is also slightly quicker in DE (when one plays NWN for years, 10ths of a second are noticeable).
  • Multi-tasking (alt-tabbing to desktop) is quicker and more reliable in the EE (the DE version randomly hangs and needs to be shut down from the Task Manager if that happens). Then again, many people just play in Windowed mode.
  • You can't click on the ground under the transparent feedback window in EE like you can in DE (highly annoying).
  • The EE suffers from door transition bugs. Cutscenes may clip on the EE, too. Neither of these problems reside in DE.
  • NW Shader and my fave UI mods don't work or glitch out in EE. This is huge for me.
  • The EE sports a few minor visual "enhancements" (subjective). However, I can get these through NW Shader and other mods if I want them, but I don't want them.

Therefore, there is no reason for me to play the EE version other than for the updated Darkness Over Daggerford campaign. In the future, Beamdog's render rewrite, UI refactor and pathfinding routine optimizations may make the EE more attractive (as could an employment of FPC).

Neverwinter Nights 1 Patching

(DE only.)

First up, make sure your game is patched to v1.69. Even if it's the GoG version I would run this to be sure because some people have had problems getting community content to work, which the patch seemed to fix each time. So, patch your game!

Have you patched your game? Ok, let's move on then!
