Mage BG2
Aside from the obvious higher level spells, the main difference between BG1 Mage and BG2 Mage is itemization, which is exemplified by game-breaking spellcasting time reduction via Robe of Vecna.
Mage Description
The mage strives to be a master of magical energies, shaping them and casting them as spells. To do so, he studies strange tongues and obscure facts and devotes much of his time to magical research. A mage must rely on knowledge and wit to survive. Mages are rarely seen adventuring without a retinue of fighters and men-at-arms. Because there are different types (or schools) of magic, there are different types of mages. The mage studies all types of magic and learns a wide variety of spells. His broad range makes him well suited to the demands of adventuring.
Mage vs Sorcerer
When was the last time Sorcerer BG2 emptied their spellbook, even when soloing? We don't strictly need the extra spell slots offered by the Sorcerer. So really, the Mage is just as good as the Sorcerer. We can't cast as many spells per day but we have the ability to tailor our spell slots to different encounter scenarios, allowing us to optimize and experiment on the fly.
In addition, one shouldn't underestimate the bonus experience point yield for scribing spell scrolls (uXP); it really adds up and can be abused with the erase feature of the spellbook. But even without abusing that feature, XP yield for scribing scrolls fast-tracks Baldur's Gate dual-classing to the point of trivializing its downtime. Indeed, XP yield for non-abuse SS adds up to about 1 million XP, which equates to Mages being a level or two higher than Sorcerers.
