FIGHTER, Baldur's Gate 1 BG1

Fighter Baldur's Gate 1

Fighter is a Best Baldur's Gate class in BioWare's cRPG of 1998, Baldur's Gate 1. The combat role of the Fighter is melee or ranged physical-based damage dealer and conventional tank.

The Fighter's chief role in parties is to draw the aggro and hold it back so that Mage BG1 can unleash hell from the backrow.

Providing they wield Baldur's Gate Best Weapons, Fighters are capable of taking out any enemy in the game. Of all classes, they are the most gear-dependent. In terms of formation, Fighters should be first-ranked in line, file and wedge.

The fighter is a champion, swordsman, soldier, and brawler. He lives or dies by his knowledge of weapons and tactics. Fighters can be found at the front of any battle, contesting toe-to-toe with monsters and villains. A good fighter needs to be strong and healthy if he hopes to survive.

Where possible, Fighters should be buffed with arcane spells BG1 and divine spells BG1 in order to increase their accuracy, damage and attack rate as well as their AC, HPs and resistances.

Fighters should be warded when going up against Mages and the supernatural, as there is nothing worse than the toughest and most damaging combat unit turning on the party. Without wards, Fighters are also vulnerable to getting immobilized and then hacked to pieces. Post-battle, Fighters may require healing, but they only need to rest when heavily fatigued.

As it pertains to cRPG History, Baldur's Gate represented the classic Fighter the best.

Fighter BG1 Offense

The Fighter's percentile Strength along with full proficiency, THAC0 and ApR progression grants them solid offense.

Fighter BG1 THAC0

  • Fighters receive a THAC0 reduction per level gained
  • To Hit Armor Class Zero (THAC0): Accuracy in landing a hit in melee or from range
  • In-depth: THAC0 Baldur's Gate

Fighter BG1 Strength

We have a 10% chance to roll 18/91-99 Strength in chargen for +2 to-hit/+5 damage. 18/[1]00 grants +3/+6 but we only have a 1% chance to roll it. Thus, most people don't keep rerolling for 18/00.

Moreover, not only are the Gauntlets of Ogre Power BG1 itemized (18/00), not only are there arcane and divine spells that raise Strength to respectable levels (18/50 and 18/75), but the Manual of Gainful Exercise raises Strength to 19 regardless of our percentile score (18 + MoGE = 19 and 18/[1]00 + MoGE also = 19). Of course, Strength 19 Fighters should be wearing the Gauntlets of Weapon Expertise BG1 (to-hit +1, dmg +2), not GoOP.

To get >19 Strength, warriors or part-warriors can quaff Strength potions to increase their score up to the maximum of 25 (Violet Potion: +7 to-hit/+14 damage). Hill, Frost, Fire, Cloud, Storm and Titan Strength potions are excellent buffs for BG1 warriors. Note that the Titan potion gimps Dex and Con to 3. Not good.

Lastly, note that DUHM Bhaalspawn ability stacks with potions. Thus, we can reach Titan Strength without the Violet Potion.

Some ranged weapons have their damage modified by Strength; e.g, throwing axes.

Fighter BG1 Weapon Proficiencies

The best weapon proficiencies for Fighter are Large Sword, Small Sword and Bow.

Fighter BG1 Defense

Defensively, the Fighter's 1d10 Hit Die + Con bonus and access to Full Plate BG1 and Large Shield BG1 grants them solid conventional tanking ability. It isn't uncommon to have two or three Fighters hovering around -13 AC and 100 HPs by end-game.

Fighter BG1 Armor Class (AC)

  • Armor Class (AC): The ability to dodge, deflect or otherwise avoid incoming melee and ranged attacks, thereby mitigating damage
  • In-depth: Armor Class Baldur's Gate

Fighter BG1 Hit Points (HPs)

  • Hit Points (HPs): The ability to take damage from incoming melee and ranged attacks, or direct damage spells, without being killed, aka soak.
  • 1d10 + Constitution 19 (+5) x8 Fighter levels = 120 HPs. Con 19 Charname of race Dwarf and Con 20 Kagain only. On top of that, such a Charname can use the Manual of Bodily Health to reach the point of natural regeneration. The low regen rate of 1 HP per round is not enough to enhance tanking ability, but it will allow Charname (and Kagain) to regenerate 41 HPs per 8 hour rest as well as heal while area-transitioning. Thus, regen is still a great perk.
  • Cute but ultimately unimportant fact: Fighter Druid Dual-class can get 124 HPs, which is 4 more than a Dwarven Fighter with 20 Con can achieve.

Fighter Build BG1

Dwarven Fighter: Strength, Dexterity and Constitution are everything: max them.

  • Str 18/91-99
  • Dex 17
  • Con 19
  • Int dump
  • Wis dump
  • Cha dump

Note that Baldur's Gate Dwarves also gain one-point bonus to Death, Wand and Spell saving throws for every 3.5 points in Constitution (+5 at Con 18). Only Halflings also receive that bonus, but Halflings have a penalty to Strength and cannot attain regeneration in BG1. cf. Races Baldur's Gate.

Wear Full Plate BG1 and wield Ashideena BG1 or the Dagger of Venom BG1. Wield a Large Shield in the off-hand. Wear a helm to ward off the double damage inflicted by crits. Even melee-based Fighters should not shy away from firing bows, such as the Composite Longbow BG1.
