Bhaalspawn Abilities Baldur's Gate

Bhaalspawn Abilities Baldur's Gate

In Baldur's Gate 1, Bhaalspawn Abilities are modal powers aka special abilities granted to player characters at the end of each Chapter's dream sequence. The Bhaalspawn Ability bestowed depends on the player character's current Reputation score. A result of being spawn of Bhaal, these are divine or arcane spells which are cast-able through the modal menu.

The best Bhaalspawn ability is Draw Upon Holy Might.

High Reputation player characters progressively receive instances of Cure Light Wounds, Slow Poison and Draw Upon Holy Might whereas low rep ones receive Larloch's Minor Drain, Ghoul Touch and Vampiric Touch. See: Divine Spells Baldur's Gate & Arcane Spells Baldur's Gate.

Divine Bhaalspawn powers are much more useful than the arcane ones due to healing being vital (in BG1), poison being deadly (in BG1) and DUHM scaling with character level in order to stay relevant over the course of the campaign (Strength, Dexterity & Constitution +1 per three levels).

Since Reputation is dynamic and tailorable, it is possible to receive a mixture of the divine and arcane powers as we make our way through the campaign. Thus, we can get the full array going as per the icon infographic posted above.

Such an outcome would reflect a character possessed by both angel and devil, I guess. But I think it's pretty clear that the Good Bhaalspawn powers are superior to and more useful than the Evil ones: Cure Light Wounds is helpful in the early-going when healing sources are limited, whereas the level-scaling stat-boosts of DUHM turns us into a juggernaut by game's end. Anyway, most people role-play Good and so most people will double-up on the blue powers.

In Baldur's Gate 2, Bhaalspawn powers are bestowed based on CHARNAME'S alignment, not reputation. DUHM remains the most useful power in BG2, but all powers are lost in Spellhold and replaced with Slayer BG2 afterwards. However, Ascension BG2 reintroduces DUHM in Throne of Bhaal.
