Archer Build ToEE
The Archer Build is a ToEE Build for Troika's cRPG of 2003, Temple of Elemental Evil. In ToEE, combat roles of the Ranger include melee physical-based damage dealer (including dual-wielder) and archer-lord. In this write-up on Archer builds, I'm only concerned with the latter. Non-combat roles include scouting and tracking as well as limited spellcasting and summoning.
Ranger Archer Build
- Strength: 14
- Dexterity: max 18, pump every 4 lvls for +2
- Constitution: max 18 for up to 14 HPs per lvl
- Intelligence: 12 for 8 skillpoints per lvl
- Wisdom: 12 to cast second circle spells
- Charisma: dump
- Ranger 1: Weapon Focus: Longbow, Point Blank Shot, First Favored Enemy: Human
- Ranger 2: Rapid Shot (Archery Style)
- Ranger 3: Precise Shot
- Ranger 4: Ranger Level 1 Spells / +1 Dex
- Ranger 5: Animal Companion (Ranger), Second Favored Enemy: Goblinoid
- Ranger 6: Improved Initiative, Many Shot (Archery Style)
- Ranger 8: Ranger Level 2 Spells / +1 Dex
- Ranger 9: Improved Critical: Longbow, Evasion (Ranger)
- Ranger 10: Third Favored Enemy: Giant
Ranger Favored Enemy
For the Ranger Favored Enemy, I recommend Human (+6), Goblinoid/Bugbear (+2) and Giant (+2).
Note the Favored Enemy dmg getting tripled by the crit:
There are LOTS of humans in the campaign.
Fighter Archer Build
- Strength: 14
- Dexterity: max 18, pump every 4 lvls for +2
- Constitution: max 18 for up to 14 HPs per lvl
- Intelligence: 13
- Wisdom: get a reasonable score for Will saves
- Charisma: dump
- Fighter 1: Weapon Focus: Longbow, Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot
- Fighter 2: Rapid Shot
- Fighter 3: Dodge
- Fighter 4: Mobility / +1 Dex
- Fighter 6: Manyshot (bugged), Shot on the Run
- Fighter 8: Improved Critical: Longbow / +1 Dex
- Fighter 9: Improved Initiative
- Fighter 10: Weapon Specialization: Longbow
- Attack Bonus: 10 warrior + 5 Dexterity + 1 WF = 16.
- Damage: 1d8 weapon roll + 2 WS. Crit 19-20/x3.
Note that Many Shot is bugged. Sub it out for something else.
These two high-initiative builds will take out foes such as ettins and hill giants before they can even raise an eyebrow. Rate of fire is decent: you will get 3 ApR with Rapid Shot activated. Believe me when I say, these sharpshooters are going to steal LOTS of kills from your frontliners.
Ranger Archer vs. Fighter Archer
As you can see, the Ranger variant gets an Animal Companion and access to limited spellcasting, but she also gets Evasion and twice as many skillpoints (e.g, Survival, Spot, Listen etc.) Plus she MURDERS the most common enemy, Humans (+6 dmg).
However, the Fighter variant inflicts more raw damage and is more flexible in combat thanks to Mobility and Shot on the Run. She gets +2 dmg on EVERY enemy thanks to Weapon Specialization. Overall, the Ranger variant is more useful, though (Animal Companion, spell-casting and +skillpoints).
ToEE Longbows
WF: Longbow means you will start with a mundane Longbow equipped. You can find a Longbow +1 on the corpse of Kingfrog straight after the Moathouse. The Groaning Spirit on Temple level 3 carries one, too. What about composite longbows? There are no CLBs in ToEE; thus, no need to pump Strength.
Longbow Craft
Craft the Longbow +1 to +3 and add flame, frost and shock to it. Note that burst is bugged: it doesn't grant more elemental dmg over normal elemental, and is much more expensive. Plus, we can't add three elements. Thus, stick with normal elemental.
This requires a Wizard with Craft Arms & Armor feat + Fireball + Ice Storm + Lightning Bolt spells.
ToEE Arrows
Mundane arrows are found as loot and restocked by merchants at intervals. In addition, Screng's daughter in Nulb offers Silver Arrow x40 and the Temple itemizes x120 on its first level and x40 on its second (Littlest Troll).
Jaroo in Hommlet offers Arrow +1 x40 and another x40 are looted from the corpse of King Frog in Imeryds Run. You won't run out of ammo even if you roll with two or three archers.
Other Archer Crafts
Craft the Greater Bracers of Archery and Gauntlets Dexterity +6 to increase accuracy.
Archer Armor
Archers need no armor because they shouldn't be drawing aggro in the first place.
