ToEE Mods
As I've shown in my extensive Temple of Elemental Evil commentary, patch2 ToEE is playable without mods. Yes, there are many bugs and glitches, but they can be minimized or worked around. I have played patch2 of ToEE on and off since 2003 -- for two decades. My ToEE review and 11 of my ToEE Builds are based on 2003 ToEE patch2. So please, don't try to tell me that ToEE is unplayable without fixes and mods.
Vanilla ToEE: Version patch2
For those who want to play the version of the game that best reflects dev-intent (or, at least, its best unmodded state) patch2 is where it's at. This is the official Troika version.
Temple+
patch2 and Temple+ is the best version of ToEE because it decreases crashes and soft-locks, increases compatibility, optimizes performance and does not adversely impact the original experience with its default settings.
- Temple+ installation folder: C:\Users\..\AppData\Local\TemplePlus
- Temple+ save game location: C:\Users\..\Saved Games\TemplePlus
There are two mini-mods for Temple+: PrC Early Entry Mod and Level 1 PC Race Monsters.
moebius2778 temple.dll
patch2 + moebius2778 temple.dll / the GoG version. Yep, GoG actually patched their version of ToEE with unofficial content...
Ever since GoG came online, I have never trusted their installs because GoG will modify the games to make them more accessible to newbies, in order to get more sales. Thankfully, I have the original CD versions for all classic cRPGs, bought when they came out. Which means I can play the original versions patched, unpatched, expanded, non-expanded etc. The vast majority of GoG version cRPGs do not have that option.
Anyway, the dll fix laid the groundwork for what would become Co8. It fixes many bugs but adds many of its own and also makes modifications that imbalance the game such as increasing the level cap to 20.
Co8 3.0.4
Co8 3.0.4 fixes many bugs and doesn't make too many unnecessary changes. Unfortunately, I cannot find it online. If you know where it may be downloaded, drop me a line.
Co8 5.0.5 + Less New Content Patch
Co8 5.0.5 [no link] + Less New Content Patch. This is the best Co8 version: it's similar to the above but tweaked by one of the authors of Temple+. Again, I cannot find it online.
Co8 8.1.0
Co8 8.1.0 aka The 100,000 File Monstrosity. If you want to give Co8 a whirl, I advise going with the Lite version in order to avoid much of the unofficial content. However, Lite still adds craploads of content that shouldn't be in the game, such as the silly starter-store and fan-made spells and items.
Co8 Features
- Fixes tons of mechanical, technical and quest-related bugs and glitches (2,000 line changelog)
- Enlarges the font / makes font clearer (but not for all panels)
- Greatly expands on help.tab (integrated ruleset), description.mes (extra items) and longdescription.mes (shift-click items in inventory mode for item description)
- Gives more mouse-over info (when selecting Feats during the level-up process)
- Adds a couple of encounters, such as the one outside the moathouse
- Expands on other encounters, such as the one with Hedrack
Co8 & Temple+
Yes, you can use Co8 with Temple+. How to do that:
First, install the game and apply patch2 as you would normally. Then, install Co8, run TFE-X.exe, and activate the Co8 component. You MUST activate Co8 or Temple+ will only recognize patch2.
Once that's done, run Temple+ config and point Temple+ to your ToEE installation folder. Make sure it hooks to patch2 with Co8 in parentheses:
Launch the game from Temple+ config or Temple+.exe, NOT the Co8 launcher. When you're in-game, don't forget to go to Options → Preferences and disable (uncheck) auto-save.

Note that you can backup your ToEE folder, uninstall Co8 and then copy the contents of the folder back into the ToEE folder. Co8 will still work.
Keep on the Borderlands
There is a TCM called Keep on the Borderlands. KotB works with patch2 or Temple+. See also: Caves of Chaos.

I managed to get the ToEE + Co8 5.0.5 + New Less Content Patch + TemplePlus working. It was a pain in the ass to figure it out!
ReplyDelete1. You have to install Co8 5.0.0 Final.
2. Extract the CMF5.0.5 files to your ToEE folder.
3. Extract "addons" folder from LNCP rar file to your ToEE folder. Then rename "Circle of Eight Modpack 5.0.0" into "Co8-5.0.0".
3. Download Circle of Eight Modpack 5.7.0 BETA and extract the files to your ToEE folder.
4. Start TFE-X program. It will find Co8 5.0.0 and convert it to newer format for compability.
5. After it's all done then click on "Add-On Packs" and install!
Hopefully it also for you works when you try it! I really enjoy your content, keep it up!
Thanks. Don't have ToEE currently installed.
DeleteTime-permitting, may replay in 2024.
great to have an updated MOD.
DeleteThis isn't an update, it's an old version of Co8 + old patch.
DeleteAnd where is the Circle of Eight Modpack 5.7.0 BETA download link?
DeleteAnd you are trying to run Co8 5.0.5. Why you are also installing Circle of Eight Modpack 5.7.0 BETA?
DeleteI have managed to install but when launching with Temple Plus Character Screen stats seemed to messed up.
