Wizard Spells List ToEE



Welcome to my list of Wizard spells for ToEE. Note that Wizard and Sorcerer spells are interchangeable: both classes have the same spells available to them, but I will refer to such as "Wizard spells" for brevity's sake.

The spells are separated into level sections, the school is given for each spell, and the item code for the scroll is given as well (useful for Wizards). Each section also links to commentary on the spell level.

In total, there are 125 unique Sorcerer/Wizard spells in ToEE. Bard spells are different.

There are three means to acquiring an arcane spell:

  • Select the spell in chargen or level-up processes
  • Find or purchase the spell scroll in the game-world
  • Scribe an already-known scroll / make a copy of it (craft)

Only Wizards can scribe spells to their spellbook. Sorcerers can only permanently acquire spells through the chargen and level-up processes; they also have a limited repertoire. Therefore, it is much more important for Sorcerers to choose spells wisely. In addition, Sorcerers are less likely to choose spells that are good in the low levels though all but useless later on. Before choosing spells for a Sorcerer, check the in-game help.tab to see if the effect of the spell scales with caster level.

In addition, players who choose Specialist Wizards (Class Feature) should check the spell school to which each spell belongs.

Note that some spells of a circle/level are of great utility in the early going, but then become all but useless as we progress, whereas others sustain their usefulness over the course of the campaign. An example of the latter is Sleep and an example of the former is Magic Missile.

If our spellcaster has meta-magic feats, then we must also take into account how they can enhance the effectiveness of our spells. For example, in the final stages of the campaign Magic Missile may seem to lack "punch" -- until we Empower it. Then it is suddenly useful against even the bosses.

In general, I favor Enchantment spells for their immobilization and divide & conquer effects, as well as Evocation for direct damage.


Specific Illusions and Abjurations are also powerful.

The summon cap limit is five TOTAL, not five per spell. In other words, we can't have our Wizard summon five monsters and our Druid summon five animals. Also, animal companions count towards the summon cap limit.
