Canon Party
The Baldur's Gate companions assumed by Baldur's Gate 2 to have been in our Baldur's Gate 1 party constitute the Canon Party. It doesn't matter if they were in our Baldur's Gate 1 party or not, if they died in Baldur's Gate 1 or did not -- it is assumed by BG2's narrative that they were in our party and survived the adventure.
Three canon party members have survived the narrative void between BG1 and BG2 (Imoen BG2, Minsc BG2 and Jaheira BG2), but two others have been killed off permanently (Khalid BG1 and Dynaheir BG1). Thus, two companion duos were broken.
In BG1 vs BG2, the canon party was criticized for not respecting the party composition choices of the player in BG1 (including statistical consistency), thereby breaking immersion.
