Skull Trap BG2


Skull Trap is a BG2 Best Spell in BioWare's cRPG of 1998-2001, Baldur's Gate 2. Skull Trap is an extremely damaging direct damage or trap-type AoE that inflicts 1-6 magic damage per caster level up to 10d6 (save vs. spell for half). Skull Trap sports a deceptively wide radius.

In BG2, the damage of Skull Trap is uncapped but SCS BG2 arbitrarily caps the damage at 12d6.

  • Range: 20 yards 
  • Duration:  Until triggered
  • Casting Time: 3 
  • Area of Effect: 30 foot radius 
  • Saving Throw: Half damage

Upon casting this spell, a skull is thrown by the caster at the target area. The skull floats in the area until a creature comes within 20 feet of it. When this happens the skull is triggered and explodes, damaging everyone within a 30 foot radius. The damage inflicted is equal to 1d6 hit points per level of the caster, or half with a successful save vs. spell. When casting this spell it is wise to set it far away from the party, lest they set it off accidentally.



A third circle necromancy spell that inflicts magical damage and scales well with caster level; in fact, it's 1d6 per level - uncapped. We can instantly inflict 100 dmg on each member of a mob with a single casting of this vicious spell. BOOM. Lots of things just died. We like that.

Other than its scaling, the ability to preset the traps and lure the enemy into them is what sets it apart from most AoEs. Get low-level immunity to the skulls by casting Minor Globe of Invulnerability.

In BG2, three Skull Traps can be loaded into the Spell Sequencer to inflict mega-damage. The best AoE in both BG and BG2, overall. Of course, BG2-only Sunfire is better against the rarer MR-based foes such as Drow.

Skull Trap is a god-tier spell.
