Fallout 2 Military Base Mariposa

The Mariposa Military Base is a cRPG Dungeon in Black Isle's cRPG of 1998, Fallout 2. The process of entering the Military Base is an example of oldschool problem-solving reminiscent of point & click adventure games from the early 90s.

Situation: The entrance to the military base is blocked by rubble. The player must find a way to remove the rubble in order to get inside.

Note the degree of inspection. If we don't inspect our surroundings, we don't gain vital clues. This is just like point & click adventure games:

A metal pole is found on the ground nearby. It is picked up and attached to the cart. Then, some dynamite (which is not found on-site) is attached to the end of the pole (right pic):

The cart is then pushed down the tracks, exploding as it hits the rubble:

With the rubble cleared, we can get inside!

Thing is, why is a metal pole and a mining cart needed in order to clear the rubble, when placing dynamite within the rubble would serve the same purpose? The player would be used to setting dynamite for timed detonation by this point of the campaign... but suddenly, we need a pole and a cart? I don't get how the inertia would help, but then, I'm not a demolitions expert, and the means of gaining entry is amusing.

Also, placing the dynamite onto the pole requires careful, pixel-perfect positioning of the cursor because the pole is thin and hard to see because it doesn't highlight once attached. Then, the player must right-click the mouse, hold the button down, select the backpack icon and then select the dynamite in their inventory. This sort of UI quirkiness is second nature to veterans of Fallout, but perhaps not to mere mortals.

Melchior Fallout 2

Melchior the Magnificent is a Super Mutant boss guarding the FEV vats on the fourth level of the Military Base. Amusingly, Melchior hurls rats into the vats which then mutate into critters such as  deathclaws and floaters.
