Star Wars: Rebel Assault IBM PC MS-DOS LucasArts 1993

Star Wars: Rebel Assault

LucasArts released Star Wars: Rebel Assault for IBM PC MS-DOS 5.0 in November of 1993. Star Wars: Rebel Assault was designed and programmed by Vince Lee.

In Star Wars: Rebel Assault players assume the role of pilot for the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War. Plot-wise, Star Wars Rebel Assault consists of 15 chapters and draws from George Lucas films Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back of 1977/80.

Star Wars: Rebel Assault is a heavily cinematized CD-ROM shoot 'em up that employs digitized pre-rendered playfields, digitized sprites and digital speech, sound effects and music. Along with The 7th Guest and Wing Commander 3, Star Wars: Rebel Assault ushered in the era of CD-ROM.

Star Wars: Rebel Assault employs both third-person and first-person pseudo-3D perspectives in dogfighting, rail-shooting and 3rd-person shooter gameplay styles. Star Wars: Rebel Assault streams pre-rendered digitized terrain from CD-ROM, overlayed by scaling and rotating sprites. Naturally, the original CGI pre-rendered assets are greatly reduced in resolution for real-time game employment, but the pre-rendered cutscenes display in higher fidelity than the playfields and sprites. Overall, Star Wars: Rebel Assault features almost 400 megs of pre-rendered art assets.

Star Wars: Rebel Assault displays in 256-color VGA 320x200 at 15 FPS. Star Wars: Rebel Assault graphics detail can be set via exe command-line switch (/x1, /x2, /x3).

Star Wars: Rebel Assault was distributed on 1x CD-ROM and is set up via Rebel.exe launcher and run via Assault.exe.

Star Wars: Rebel Assault requires an i80386DX 33 MHz CPU, 4 megs of XMS RAM and 150K per sec CD-ROM drive. Star Wars: Rebel Assault is a Rational Systems DOS/4GW Protected mode Run-time.

Star Wars: Rebel Assault audio supports Sound Blaster, Sound Blaster 16, Sound Blaster Pro, Pro Audio Spectrum, Pro Audio Spectrum 16, Aria and Gravis UltraSound.

Star Wars: Rebel Assault controls support mouse or analogue joystick.
