Boot Camp StarCraft 1
Boot Camp is the tutorial of the Terran Campaign in Blizzard's RTS of 1998, StarCraft 1. Staged on Mar Sara, Boot Camp introduces the Marine and SCV units of the Terran, mineral fields and vespene gas resources, and the Command Center, Refinery and Supply Depot buildings of the Terran. The Zerglings of the Zerg Jormungand Brood are also introduced as an optional encounter.
StarCraft Tutorial
This tutorial will be of use to new players or rusty veterans.
- Click the left mouse button (LMB) to select a unit. Right-click on the playing field to move the unit to the indicated position. Right-click an enemy to attack it.
- Hold down the Shift key and click on units to add or remove them from a group.
- Click-hold the LMB on the playing field and drag a box around units to group-select them (aka marquee selection).
- Rather than trying to directly click on a moving unit, marquee select it.
- When you have a group selected (max 12 units), hit Ctrl + 1-0 to assign that group to hotkeys 1-0. Hit the hotkey once to select the group and twice to center the view on that group.
- Scroll the playing field by moving the mouse-cursor to the edges of the screen (aka hardware-accelerated edgescreen auto-scrolling).
- Click on the auto-map to jump to a position. You can also click-hold the LMB on the auto-map to scroll the playing field quickly (aka scanning).
- When you click a unit or building, its options are displayed in a box at the bottom-right of the screen.
- To repair a unit, click on a Space Construction Vehicle (SCV), click the repair icon and then click on the unit. You can speed up the rate of repair by assigning more SCVs to repair the unit (aka stacking).
- To mine a resource, click the SCV and right-click the resource (crystal minerals or vespene gas)
You use SCVs to construct buildings, not construction yards. This can confuse new players or veterans of traditional RTS games. Click on the SCV to see its construction options.
Terrans can also move some of their buildings (aka lift off).
In the Boot Camp tutorial, you can move the Command Center a few squares closer to the mineral field.
When a mission first begins, save your game in a separate slot. Name savegames by mission number (0-10). And each time you save, name the savegame 1-1, 1-2 and so on. By saving often and in separate slots, you can avoid fail-states. Or you can play hardcore Ironman like I do (no saving at all).
When a mission first begins, and you are not sure what to do exactly, at least get your SCVs mining minerals. And make a few more SCVs. Or build a Bunker.
Boot Camp Mission Objectives
- Build three Supply Depots
- Build a Refinery
- Gather 100 Vespene Gas
Zerg Force Composition
- Zergling x12
