Wasteland StarCraft 1
Wasteland is the first mission of the Terran Campaign in Blizzard's RTS of 1998, StarCraft 1. Staged on Mar Sara, Wasteland sets the Colonial Militia of the Terran against the Garm Brood of the Zerg. In addition, Wasteland introduces the Terran Barracks and Jim Raynor (enhanced Vulture).
Note that Raynor's Vulture is an extremely strong unit in comparison to your stock units. And being mechanized (mechanical in nature), his Vulture can be repaired by SCVs (whereas Marines cannot be). Thus, Raynor should draw the aggro (tank the enemy).
Over stock Marines Raynor's Vulture has +260 health, +3 armor and +1 sight range. Also, his fragmentation grenade inflicts +24 (concussive damage) at +2 range over the Marines' (normal-damage) Gauss Rifle, but with -7 cooldown. In addition Raynor can use Spider Mines that inflict 125 explosive radial-splash damage (AoE = Area of Effect).
Naturally, the movement rate of Vulture vehicles far exceeds that of on-foot Marines (about twice as fast).
So yeah, you should make use of Hero units even though they are plot-critical (aka Game Over if they die).
