Spellcraft NWN
Spellcraft is a spellcaster and survivability skill in Neverwinter Nights. Along with Use Magic Devic NWN and Tumble NWN, it is one of the best skills to dump ranks into, regardless of NWN build.
As in IWD2, Spellcraft allows us to identify what NWN spells allies or enemies are casting AS they are casting them. Imagine not having Spellcraft when that necromancer begins his guttural incantation. Then, he unleashes the death magic, the orc is insta-killed, and the orc didn't even know why.
Dumb orc is dumb. Dumb orc DIES dumb.
Dedicated spellcasters such as Wizards, Sorcerers, Clerics and Druids are more likely to invest heavily in the skill, since for Fighters and the like, it is cross-class. There is nothing wrong with Fighters taking Spellcraft as a cross-class skill, but it is better to dip into Bard for skilldumping purposes. Or go Red Dragon Disciple.
Spellcraft Skill
- Ability: Intelligence.
- Requires Training: Yes.
- Classes: All.
Spellcraft is used to identify spells and to perform counterspells.
Spellcraft Check
A successful check means that the character has identified a spell being cast by an opponent. The DC of this check is equal to 15 + spell level. The character also gains a +1 bonus for every 5 ranks in this skill to all saving throws against spells.
A specialist wizard gets a +2 bonus when dealing with a spell from his specialized school. As well, a successful Spellcraft check is required before your character can attempt to counterspell. The specialist wizard suffers a -5 penalty when dealing with a spell or effect from a prohibited school.
Use: Spellcraft checks are automatic whenever a spell is cast nearby.
