LIGHTNING BOLT: Baldur's Gate 2 BG2

Lightning Bolt is a Baldur's Gate spell in BioWare's cRPG of 1998-2001, Baldur's Gate.

  • Lightning Bolt (Evocation)
  • Level: 3
  • Range: 40 yards + 10 yards/level
  • Duration: Instantaneous
  • Casting Time: 3
  • Area of Effect: Special
  • Saving Throw: 1/2

Upon casting this spell, the wizard releases a powerful stroke of electrical energy that inflicts 1d6 points of damage per level of the spellcaster (maximum damage of 10d6) to each creature within its area of effect. A successful saving throw vs. spell reduces this damage to half (round fractions down). The bolt begins at a range and height decided by the caster and streaks outward in a direct line from the casting wizard (e.g., if a 40-foot bolt was started at 180 feet from the wizard, the far end of bolt would reach 220 feet (180 + 40).  If the lightning bolt intersects with a wall it will bounce until it reaches its full length.

◦ Lightning Bolt (Evocation, SCRL1K): Awesome ricocheting direct damage AoE that inflicts 1-6 electrical dmg per caster level up to a max of 10d6. But the thing is, if the bolt ricochets back and forth between objects in close proximity, that dmg is going to go through the roof (it ricochets until its length is exhausted, which is 40 yards + 10 per caster level).

Of course, the bolt can easily backfire and electrocute the entire party, leaving them as nothing more than scorched corpses on the cobble-stone pavement. Which is why we want Minor Globe of Invulnerability active before we whip up a storm.

The area field of the item description is amusing: "Area: Path of Bolt" -- but the "path" is so unpredictable. Possibly the most impressive spell in the genre as it pertains to aesthetics. I love this spell [vid]. Note that there are also wands of lightning itemized.
Rank: Top-tier.
