The Legend of Kyrandia
Westwood Studios released The Legend of Kyrandia: Book One for IBM PC MS-DOS 3.3 in August of 1992. The Legend of Kyrandia is a graphics adventure game that features steamlined interaction and over 100 painterly scenes overlayed by high-quality sprite and scenery animations.
In assuming the role of Brandon, a prince, the object of The Legend of Kyrandia is to defeat the evil Jester, Malcolm, recover the Kyragem, reclaim the throne and save the land of Kyrandia.
The Legend of Kyrandia employs a point-and-click interface, but there is no list of verb commands to choose from. Instead, players simply click on the playfield to walk to a position on the playfield or click on the playfield exit to arrive in an adjacent, contiguous scene. In addition, players click on scenery to receive feedback or click on objects to pick them up and place them into the inventory or onto the playfield from the inventory. Objects can be click-dropped on the protagonist-sprite in order to examine or use them. The feedback is text-based.
Brandon acquires a four-socket amulet into which special abilities are added over the course of the adventure. Once acquired the amulet is embedded to the UI, and magical gem-icons are added to it.
Brandon can be killed. For example, he will slowy turn green and perish if bitten by a snake. In addition, the outcome of the first encounter with Malcolm is random: Malcolm either freezes Brandon in a cube of ice or retreats to his cave, sealing its entrance with a thick sheet of ice.
