Sword of the Samurai
MicroProse released Sword of the Samurai for IBM PC MS-DOS 2.1 in November of 1989. Developed by MPS Labs, Sword of the Samurai is the spiritual successor to Pirates! of 1987.
Sword of the Samurai is primarily a strategy game, but it also employs real-time battles and arcade-action melee battles and sword-dueling segments. Sword of the Samurai's design was influenced by the films of Akira Kurosawa.
In Sword of the Samurai players assume the role of a conquesting samurai in feudal Japan. The object of Sword of the Samurai is to become shogun via a combination of diplomacy, brute-force and stealth.
Sword of the Samurai was designed by Lawrence Schick, lead-programmed by Jim Synoski, art-directed by Michael Haire and composed by Jeff Briggs, Ken Lagace and Jim McConkey.
The Role-playing Program was coded by Jim Synoski and Sid Meier, the Dueling Program was coded by Sid Meier, the Melee Program was coded by John Kennedy and the Battle Program was programmed by David McKibbin and Dan Chang.

Sword of the Samurai Technical
Sword of the Samurai requires 512K of RAM and displays in 256-color VGA 320x200, 256-color MCGA (PS/2 models 25 & 30), 16-color Tandy 1000 or EGA 320x200, 4-color CGA 320x200 or Hercules monochrome.
Sword of the Samurai audio supports AdLib sound board, Roland MT-32 MIDI board, Tandy sounds and IBM generic sounds.
Sword of the Samurai controls support mouse, keyboard and two-button joystick.
Sword of the Samurai was distributed on 2x 3.5" 720kB DD diskette or 3x 5.25" 360K floppy disks and extracts and installs to hard disk drive manually. The install size is 950K and consists of 33 files.
