World Class Leader Board IBM PC MS-DOS Access Software 1987

World Class Leader Board

Access Software released World Class Leader Board for IBM PC MS-DOS in October of 1987. World Class Leader Board is a pro-golf simulator designed by Bruce Carver and Roger Carver. The PC version of World Class Leader Board was programmed by Kevin Homer, and the graphics were drawn by Douglas Vandegrift.

World Class Leader Board features three difficulty settings and four 18-hole courses: Champions Cypress Creek of Texas, Doral Country Club of Florida, St. Andrews of Scotland and the fictional Gauntlet Country Club. The courses can be selected via A, B, C or D and the number of holes can be set to 18, 36, 54 or 72. The 72 unique holes in World Class Leader Board can be modified via The Course Editor. Players can also practice on the putting green or at the driving range.

Top-down course maps are not pictured in-game (manual-only), but a top-down map of each hole can be viewed via the T-key.

World Class Leader Board supports 1-4 players. Each player can enter a name of up to eight characters in length. In one-player mode players play against par, not against computer opponents.

The object of World Class Leader Board is to hit the ball into the hole with a club in as few hits (strokes) as possible. The one that employs the fewest number of strokes wins.

Swinging the club and hitting the ball are governed by two indicators that require timed inputs on behalf of players: Power Indicator and Snap Indicator. Power is self-explanatory but Snap governs whether the ball is hooked, sliced or hit straight. An on-screen cursor can be moved horizontally over the playfield in order to aim the flight of the ball. Wind-speed and direction need to be taken into account when aiming. The Punch Shot can be employed via the P-key.

Naturally, the object is to keep the ball on the fairway, reach the putting green and sink the ball in the hole -- but that is easier said than done.

Club selection, hazard awareness and awareness of wind speed/direction and terrain slope is paramount. Hazards include the rough as well as shrubs, trees, water and sandtraps. The ball can deflect off shrubs and trees.

World Class Leaderboard redraws a 240x200 pixel drawspace after each stroke -- every line, solid-fill, shrub and tree. The golfer sprite is well-animated and the ball is drop-shadowed.

World Class Leader Board is keyboard or joystick controlled and displays in 4-color CGA or 16-color EGA, VGA and Tandy or 4-color Hercules 720x348.

World Class Leader Board Realsound digitized sound consists of voiced commentary, polite crowd applause, birds tweeting, crickets chirping and frogs croaking. The sound effect of striking the ball is realistic. Sounds can be toggled and the volume adjusted.

World Class Leader Board was distributed on 1x/2x 5.25" 360kB floppy disks (4-color/16-color) or 1x 3.5" 720kB diskette (16-color) and extracts and installs to hard disk drive via hinstall. The install size for the 256K CGA 1.00 version of 1987 is 500 kbytes and consists of 84 files whereas the install size for the 512K VGA 5.32 version of 1989 and the 5.50 re-release of 1992 is 650 kbytes and consists of 63 files.

If Famous Courses of the World Vol. I-III of 1987-88 are installed as well, the install size becomes 900 kbytes and consists of 87 files.

World Class Leader Board manual: 16 pages.
