Seek and Destroy IBM PC MS-DOS 1996 Safari Software

Seek & Destroy

Safari Software released Seek and Destroy for IBM PC MS-DOS 5.0 in 1996. Seek and Destroy is a multi-directionally trucking pseudo-3D shoot 'em up in which players control an Apache gunship or a battle tank.

Seek and Destroy displays in square-pixel VGA 320x240.

Seek and Destroy features ultra-smooth 360° screen rotation of its 3D battlescapes; its sprites rotate and scale independently of but synchronize with the playfield (as in Doom of 1993). Seek and Destroy also features helicopter strafing and tank turret rotation. Explosion, terrain and overlay graphics detail are configurable.

Seek and Destroy Weapons System

Seven on-board vehicle banks/bays can be loaded in Seek and Destroy, which features one of the best weapons systems in the shoot 'em up genre:

  • Chain gun: Single stream, Dual stream, Dual stream swinging-arc
  • Rockets (Chopper only): Dual rockets, Triple-fire rocket spread, Four Side rockets
  • Air-to-Ground Ballistic (Chopper only): Non-locking rocket, Lock-on single rocket, Lock-on twin rockets
  • Air-to-Air Missiles (Chopper only)
  • Napalm (Chopper only): Single stream, triple stream, multi-stream star-shaped napalm bomb
  • Air Strike: Low, mid and high impact air strike
  • Shells (Tank only): Single shell, Rapid-fire, Dual shells
  • Flame Thrower (Tank only): Single stream of napalm, long-range stream of napalm, Dual-stream long-range napalm
  • Special Weapons: Mega Missile (Chopper only), Super Napalm (Chopper only), Bomb (Chopper only), Mine (Tank only), Power Shell (Tank only), Ground to Air (Tank only)

The recommended specs for the PC version of Seek and Destroy are i80486/DX2-66 MHz CPUs with 8 megs of RAM and 1 meg vRAM. Seek and Destroy requires 550 kbytes of free conventional RAM and 2½ megs of RAM at minimum.

Seek and Destroy is a Rational Systems DOS/4GW Protected mode run-time.

PC Seek and Destroy supports joystick and mouse control. Seek and Destroy audio supports Sound Blaster, Sound Blaster Pro, Sound Blaster 16 and Gravis Ultrasound.

The PC version of Seek and Destroy was programmed by Aaron Koolen and drawn by Rod Smith. Grant Wallis programmed the 3D graphics, and Paul Andrews handled the sound library.

Seek and Destroy was distributed on 1x CD-ROM and extracts and installs to hard disk drive via custom installer, with an install size of 18 megs.

Seek and Destroy Amiga 1993

Vision Software released the original version of Seek and Destroy for the Amiga in 1993. Amiga Seek and Destroy detects and takes advantage of AGA chipsets and accelerated Amigas (e.g., the 68020 A1200 AGA). Digitized speech is enhanced on Amigas equipped with 1 meg of RAM.

The Amiga version of Seek and Destroy lacks the ability to pilot the battle tank (gunship-only). Amiga Seek and Destroy features 14 missions that include desert, snow, sea and jungle theatres. In addition, coop is supported in that one player can pilot the gunship while another mans the weapons system.

Amiga Seek and Destroy was programmed by Paul Andrews, drawn by Rod Smith and composed by Blair Zuppicich.

Amiga Seek and Destroy was distributed on 4x 3.5" 880kB diskettes. It was not installable to hard disk drive.

The PC version is better than the original Amiga version (runs better, better presentation, has more features), but the PC version came out three years after the Amiga version and draws on 10 times more computational power.
