The Legend of Robin Hood
Sierra On-Line released Conquests of the Longbow: The Legend of Robin Hood for IBM PC MS-DOS in October of 1991. Conquests of the Longbow is a graphics adventure game that employs Sierra On-Line's icon-driven interface that debuted in Kings Quest V of 1990.
Conquests of the Longbow is the successor to Conquests of Camelot of 1990.
In Conquests of the Longbow the player assumes the role of Robin Hood who, with the help of the Merry Men of Sherwood Forest, seeks to raise money in order to pay the ransom that will free King Richard the Lionheart, who has been captured by Duke Leopold of Austria. If Robin Hood fails in his quest Prince John will seize the crown and rout the outlaws from Sherwood Forest and/or execute Robin Hood for brigandage. Naturally, Robin Hood contends with the forces of the Sheriff of Nottingham during his adventure.
While Conquests of the Longbow is primarily a point-and-click adventure game, it also employs silly arcade sequences with adjustable difficulty settings, including "auto-win."
Conquests of the Longbow also features fast travel via map-screens, thereby diminishing exploration.
Mini-games include quarterstaff combat, PoV archery, dropping stones on guards and a medieval boardgame called "Nine Men's Morris". Robin Hood can also wear disguises, employ Druidic magic, give money to the poor, explore mazes and sit around the campfire with his merry band at the end of each day, drinking ale and discussing their plans.
Conquests of the Longbow should have focused 100% on point-and-click adventure and branching plot-lines. I would have replaced the mini-games with branching dialogues, and dialogue choices.
Overall, I give Conquests of the Longbow 6.5/10. A lot of work went into researching the game, the graphics are well-drawn and the music and writing suit the legend-history of Robin Hood as it is commonly understood.
Conquests of the Longbow displays in 256-color VGA 320x200.
