GREATER BASILISK, Baldur's Gate

Greater Basilisk Baldur's Gate

Greater Basilisk is a Baldur's Gate enemy in BioWare's cRPG of 1998, Baldur's Gate. Greater Basilisks are tough reptilians most notable for their ability to rapidly fire petrification gaze. Sometimes, they refire the gaze on already-petrified victims, causing them to explode into rocky chunks. And exploded victims are treated the same as shattered or chunked ones: they can't be raised from the dead.

Petrification Gaze

The ranged gaze attack of Greater Basilisks has a THAC0 bonus of 32,767 and inflicts petrification on failed save vs. Death at -4, at a rate of 3 ApR. Since the gaze attack is not a true to-hit roll, there is no 5% critical miss chance; thus, gaze never misses.

Protection Against Petrification

Petrification gaze does not bypass magic resistance and can be warded by Protection From Petrification, scroll of Protection From Petrification [SCRL15] and Potion of Mirrored Eyes [POTN38].

Even with MR or a ward, the gaze still inflicts on-hit animation delay on the sprite, hindering movement and causing spellcaster disruption.

Petrification can be removed by casting a scroll of Stone to Flesh [SCRLPET] on the victim. The equivalent spell only exists in BG2.

In melee, Greater Basilisks have a THAC0 of 11 and inflict an average of 3.5 slashing damage at a rate of 3 ApR, wielding 1d6 claws that also inflict 10 points of poison damage over 10 secs on failed saves vs. Death at +4.

Greater Basilisks lack the noxious breath AoE of AD&D 2nd Edition Greater Basilisks.

Defensively, unhelmed Greater Basilisks have ACs of 2, 78 HPs and saving throws of 11-13-12-13-14.

Greater Basilisks have a morale of 10, a morale break of 4 and morale recovery of 45. They have no resistances or immunities.

7,000 XP.

Greater Basilisk Location

Greater Basilisks are found on the map east of the Temple of Lathander (Mutamin's Basilisks) and at the top of Durlag's Tower, but can also spawn as waylays. Since it is unlikely that waylaid parties would have protection from petrification handy, GB waylays are the most lethal waylays of all, and can easily end No Reload Runs.
