Magic Damage Resistance BG2 Baldur's Gate 2

Magic Damage Resistance BG2

In Baldur's Gate 1 and Baldur's Gate 2, Magic Damage Resistance (MDR) is a reduction in magic damage incurred from spells, spell-like abilities and on-hit sources. Magic Damage Resistance functions exactly as per physical Damage Resistance BG2. MDR is not to be confused with Magic Resistance BG2 (MR).

Example of Magic Damage Resistance

For example, we can halve the magic damage inflicted by Magic Missile or ADHW if we wear Belt of Inertial Barrier BG2, which has 50% MDR. In addition, Corthala Family Armor bestows 25% MDR and stacks with the girdle for 75% MDR total.

  • Magic damage would actually heal us if we could attain >100% MDR, but it is impossible to do so.
  • Ascension Balthazar is one of the few enemies (or allies) that have innate MDR
  • Uniquely, Keldorn's Hallowed Redeemer +2 [NPSW03] inflicts 5 points of retributive magic damage.

All that said, MDR is much more useful in Icewind Dale 2.
