There are three default, 18 acquirable and 16 upgradeable augmentations in Ion Storm's cRPG of 2000, Deus Ex 1. It depends a lot on playstyle and FPS aptitude, but the best augmentations in Deus Ex 1 are Ballistic Protection, Regeneration, Speed Enhancement, Microfibral Muscle  and Power Recirculator.

Acquirable augmentations are contained in Augmentation Canisters that are found in the gameworld, each of which hold two augs only one of which may be installed per canister acquisition. Once installed via medbot, augs can be upgraded with Augmentation Upgrade Canisters, and an agent's bioelectric power consumed by aug usage can be restored with Bioelectric Cells, both of which can also be found in the gameworld.

Important: Augmentations CANNOT be uninstalled; their installations are permanent.

The five augmentation types/slots are default, optical, cranial, subdermal, torso, arms and legs. With the exception of the cranial slot (whose augs are weak), all aug-slots are eminently useful if the correct aug is chosen for the playstyle.

 

With the exception of default augs, synthetic heart and power recirculator, augmentations can be upgraded in tech levels (1-4). The higher the tech level, the more effective or efficient the aug.

In the above screencap, we can see that cranium, eyes and limbs only have one slot whereas subdermal has two and torso three. And looking at the list below, we can see that with each slot-installation, we are making a choice between two augs.

• Optical: Targeting or Vision Enhancement
• Arms: Microfibral Muscle or Combat Strength
• Legs: Speed Enhancement or Run Silent
• Subdermal 1: EMP Shield or Ballistic Protection
• Subdermal 2: Cloak or Radar Transparency
• Torso 1: Aqualung or Environmental Resistance
• Torso 2: Regeneration or Energy Shield
• Torso 3: Synthetic Heart or Power Recirculator

With the exception of Torso 3, there is more than one itemization instance of each Augmentation Canister. Thus, for example, it is possible to eventually install both Cloak and Radar Transparency but NOT Speed Enhancement and Silent Running because there is only one leg slot (which represents both legs).
