Creatures Commodore 64 Apex Computer Productions 1990

Creatures

Apex Computer Productions of the U.K. released Creatures for the Commodore 64 in 1990. Published by Thalamus, Creatures is a cartoon-like puzzle-platform game notable for its precise controls, colorful graphics and overall high production values. Creatures was programmed by John Rowlands and drawn and composed by Steve Rowlands.

Clyde Radcliff Exterminates All The Unfriendly Repulsive Earth-ridden Slime:
C.R.E.A.T.U.R.E.S.

In Creatures players control a fuzzy-wuzzy Blotian by the name of Clyde Radcliff. Originating on planet Blot, Clyde is tasked with ridding a Pacific island of Earth of demons and freeing his fellow fuzzy-wuzzies from devilish torture chambers.

Clyde can move left and right, jump and fire weapons. Clyde collects ingredients from Magic Potion Creatures that a Witch can use to concoct potions that Clyde then quaffs, granting him special weapons, of which there are eight that can be upgraded in three tiers. Once acquired, the weapons can be cycled through on-the-fly. Clyde can also emit a jet of flame or "dragonbreath", akin to a flame thrower. The Witch can also give Clyde hints on how to beat the Torture Chambers.

Creatures playfields feature lots of on-screen colors, many animated sprites and super-smooth four-layer parallax scrolling. However, screens scroll slowly and only in one direction -- to the right. Unusually, the demons are extremely tanky and their life-forces are sometimes linked.

Overall, Creatures is one of the best-looking, best-sounding and most playable games to appear on the C64.
