Bio Challenge Amiga Delphine Software 1989 Paul Cuisset

Bio Challenge

Delphine Software of France released Bio Challenge for the Amiga in 1989. Bio Challenge is a puzzle-platform game notable for its exceptional controls, presentation and audiovisuals.

Bio Challenge was programmed by Paul Cuisset, drawn by Denis Mercier and composed by Jean Baudlot.

In Bio Challenge players control a cyborg known as KLIPT. Clad in solid steel amor, KLIPT is tasked with retrieving four shards of an amulet and several enemy fragments on each of the six planetscapes. Along the way KLIPT negotiates platforms, pits, teleporters and enemies, both airborne and ground-based. Once the shards and fragments have been collected the cyborg enters a stargate, transforms into a flying cannon and faces off against the end-level guardian.

In cyborg form KLIP can move left and right, jump diagonally left and right, leap high into the air, jump-spin, spin on the spot, crouch, somersault, carefuly climb down from platforms and pick up shards and fragments. KLIP can also collect barrels of oil for health and cauldrons that grant power-ups and bonuses.

KLIPT has no weapons in cyborg form. The weaker flying foes are slain by jump-spinning into them, but the armored foes can only be slain by knocking steel-slab platforms down onto them.

Platforms can be knocked down by somersaulting on them. Platforms can also be moved left and right and knocked down and across by jump-spinning at their edges. Platforms have notches in them that indicate when they will drop. In addition, their positions are reset by taking teleports.

Graphics-wise, Bio Challenge features a high color-count, drop-shadowed cyborg and platform and smooth bi-directional screen-scrolling, four-layers of parallax and gradient transitions.

Audio-wise, Bio Challenge features sampled speech, atmospheric sound effects and some of the best music heard in Amiga games of 1989.

Bio Challenge was distributed by Palace Software on 1x 3.5" 880kB DD diskette.
