Omega Brood War
Omega is the tenth mission of the Zerg Campaign in Blizzard's RTS expansion of 1998, StarCraft: Brood War. Staged on the Char Space Platform, Omega sets Kerrigan's Zerg Swarm against Artanis of the Fleet of the Executor of the Sargos Tribe of the Protoss (blue), Arcturus Mengsk of the Terran Dominion Elite Guard (red) and General DuGalle of the UED Battle Fleet of the Cronus Wing of the United Earth Directorate (white).
Omega Mission Objectives
- Destroy all enemy forces.
The initial problem with this mission is that your base is surrounded by three other larger and more developed bases, but the bigger problem is that you need to actually fully destroy these other bases. Defending and building up is the easy part, taking out the enemy is the hard part. The upside is that you have access to a decent amount of minerals and vespene; and other deposits and reserves are located nearby.
At first you will be defending your base from three-pronged intermittent attacks by Mengsk's Terran Elite Guard (red), DuGalle's Protoss Sargos Tribe (blue) and the UED's Battle Fleet (white). Dont waste your time and resources building Spore or Sunken Colonies. Take the mineral field and vespene reserve to the south as soon as you are able to fully defend a second base. Without the second base you won't be able to keep apace in terms of unit numbers and upgrades. You should be generating Hydralisks en masse and working to fully upgrade them. Use mobile Hydralisks (not static defenses) to defend your base against raids as well. Don't build any other units (with the exception of Drones and Overlords) or advanced buildings at this point.
Once you've generated a massive horde of Hydralisks, take them and a few Overlords to the southwest and start wiping out the Protoss as you move northward. Make no mistake, the biggest threat throughout this mission is the Protoss; you don't want the Protoss getting stronger. It is possible to take out Mengsk first (to remove the threat of nukes and siege tanks), but the threat posed by the Protoss is far greater in the long-term (in that the effects of their raids are less predictable). In addition, the Protoss also have a big vespene reserve that you need (9500+).
You use that vespene reserve to generate massive fleets of Mutalisks, Guardians, Devourers and Overlords to take out Mengsk. The UED can be taken out in the same manner, or by way of Hydralisks, Guardians and Overlords. Mengsk commands too many siege tanks to make Hydralisks viable.
In this mission it is possible to be raided simultaneously by five UED Battlecruisers and two Protoss Carriers (plus their supporting aircraft). Make sure that all bases have a horde of Hydralisks guarding them, supported by Overlords. Spore and Sunken Colonies don't cut the mustard in this mission; both your offense and defense should be largely Hydralisk-based because Hydralisks are strong versus air forces and good enough against most ground forces (coupled with Guardians). As well, Hydralisks and Guardians will chew through buildings in short order.
If you fail to take out one of the factions before all three become strong, your starting base will basically be defending itself from all sides against high-level raids, non-stop. The key is to wipe out one faction (preferably the Protoss) within the first 30 minutes. Doing so basically halves the sum-total of your problems.
