Baldur's Gate 3 Best Companions
There are five companions currently featured in Baldur's Gate 3, a cRPG developed by Larian Studios. The best companions have traditionally been those that are arcane spellcasters (Sorcerers and Wizards or Mages). In D&D 5.0, Warlocks are strong in the low levels (in BG3, that's Wyll).
The following companions may join the player character's party in the Early Access version of BG3:
Shadowheart BG3
"Loyal Warrior."

Shadowheart is found in Act 1: At the entrance to the Overgrown Ruins.
Shadowheart Biography
A loyal cleric of Shar, Shadowheart is the sole survivor of a holy mission undertaken on the Mistress of the Night's behest. She alone must deliver a relic of immense power to her coven in Baldur's Gate, while threatened from strange new magic that is burgeoning within. - Larian.
Astarion BG3
"Vampire Spawn."

Astarion is found in Act 1: At the beach, on a hill overlooking a Nautiloid wreck.
Astarion Biography
Astarion prowled the night as a vampire spawn for centuries, serving a sadistic master until a mind flayer parasite freed him of his bonds. Lae'zel BG3
"Ferocious Warrior."

Wyll BG3
"A Living Legend."

Gale BG3
"Wizard Prodigy."

Gale is found in Act 1: Roadside Cliffs above the Nautilus wreck.
Gale Biography
Gale is a wizard prodigy whose love for a goddess made him attempt a dread feat no mortal should. Blighted by the forbidden magic of ancient Netheril, Gale strives to undo the corruption that is overtaking him and win back his goddess' favor before he becomes a destroyer of worlds. - Larian.
Karlach BG3
"Martial Prodigy."

Every companion is a super-special snowflake that sounds like they're 20th level. They are either ferocious and prodigious or they are living legends and vampire spawn. Does "best" even matter?
Other companions: Minthara (Drow), Halsin (Druid), Minsc (Human "Berserker"), Jaheira (Half-elf Druid-warrior).
So that's 10 companions total so far. For reference, the original Baldur's Gate offered 25 companions, and BG2 offered 17.
Companions have their own backstories, quests and equipment.
Some companions may be romanceable.
