Blogger Polls have been retired

About a week ago I noticed that Add Poll was missing from the Add Gadget list in Layout

I didn't think much of it other than "Google are probably just doing some maintenance on the Add Gadget listing."

But today I wake up to see that my polls have been retired.

The message in Layout is:

"The Polls gadget has been retired, and voting is no longer possible."

I then did a bit of Googling and discovered that the Google team are doing some "Spring Cleaning". *shudder*

"To make room for some exciting updates coming soon to Blogger, we're simplifying the platform to enhance the blogging experience for all of our users ... Retiring features: Third Party Gadgets, Next Blog, Polls Widget, and Textcube".

Gotta say that's a bit disappointing. I have never understood why Operating Systems, like Windows, remove features (there are things XP can do that >XP can't), and now that seems to have happened on Blogger, too. Of course, the streamlining and simplification trends are not foreign to me at all (RPGs, anyone?)

The "Spring Cleaning" post by the Google team says that features may possibly return, but will the votes, too? I guess I'll keep the polls up in case I get lucky.

Oh, well. It's not a huge deal. But it would have been nice to keep my polls going up until their 2030 expiry date. :P

One should also bear in mind that Blogger is a free service; that if one wants full control of their content, one must get their own site (which is a full time job and therefore not an option for me).

I have thought about using a third-party polling service, but it's not like you can rely on those, either.

About a year ago I also made a contingency plan to switch to WordPress (and redirect Lilura1 to that), but I'm not motivated to make the switch: while the migration of content is automated, the amount of tweaking involved is enough to make me throw my hands up in despair and quit blogging entirely. Can you imagine reformating 260 posts to make them readable? I couldn't be paid to do that!

So, for now, I'll just wait and see what happens.

Final votes:

(Poll results have been relegated to the bottom of the blog; my poll graveyard.)
